I John 2: 24-29 (Focus 2:28) To Know Someone Well 9/3/17 Teague Bible Church

ABIDE: In O.T. Septuagint (Greek translation version of O.T. Hebrew) 16 Hebrew words are translated

to catch this idea. Below are just a few;

Remain/ stand / endure / continuous /arise / dwell / to live

ABIDE - Is used 10 times in I John chapter 2 . (as, “to live” in I John 2:17)

ABIDE - Used 118 times in N.T. 40 times in the Gospel of John and 24 times in his Epistles, (letters.)

ABIDE - Used to express the closest possible relationship between the Father and the Son.

Abide not a word we use a lot but we all know the idea. It means to “hang out” with someone you are very comfortable with; someone you love being assumed.

In doing so with God, familiarity never breeds contempt; never takes for granted, never presumptuous! It deepens and grows awesome, as we abide with God.

Question: What does abiding with God do for you? **********************************

Confidence when Christ returns

Confidence in prayer

Gives joyful anticipation of the next time you get along with God

Gives joyful anticipation of the next time you get together with other believers

You no longer doubt your salvation

Abiding brings transformation

Abiding brings discernment

Abiding stops the 9G roller coaster ride

As you are abiding healing of the past can take place; power in the present takes place; and a living, present- tense hope let you clearly see your sure and great future condition.

Text: I John 2: 24-29

v.25 - What is the core of eternal life? John 17:1-3 It is about abiding here; and abiding there.

Heaven is a definite place. However, we feel we have to spice it up to get interested in it.

We tell others, “Don’t you want to see those who have gone on before? Don’t you want to see how beautiful the place is?”

We do this because we do not understand abiding.

If I saw no one else I have to see Jesus.

Or we think abiding is just the mechanics of Bible Study and Prayer.

It includes these for sure, but cannot be done in a cold and formal way and ever approach “abiding.”

Ex. Danny K. – Moved to Mexico. “I learned in Mexico in 5 years what would have taken me 15 years in just formal study of Spanish in a classroom,” he said. He abided in Mexico; he was immersed in the language and culture and nuance of daily life there.

Ex. Learning Greek – Professor said, “Give me 30 minutes a day, 7 days a week and you will learn the language!” We all laughed, because we planned to spend at least 3-4 hours, outside of class on Greek each week. He said that would not work. You cannot cram for a language class like you can a history class.

v. 28 - “Confidence”- ( ) PARRESIA “Free, bold, and open speech”

Ex. War movies - “Permission to speak freely sir”

Ex. Hebrews 4:14-16 “,,,draw near with confidence to the throne of grace.”

Confidence/ open speech- To come before God with nothing to conceal. You have already poured out your heart many times; all the weaknesses, all the intimate details. You have been abiding, learning God’s character, learning to please Him. We talked about what abiding does for us, imagine how it is pleasing to God.

Over time you have those rare moments you say, “Lord, how do all these things going on in the world make you feel?” We conclude, “Thy will be done on earth as it in in heaven.”
