Dear Parents,

Please ensure that your children read for 10-15 min each day Monday through Thursday. Children are also encouraged to read on weekends or to have a parent, sibling or friend read to them. Time spent reading to your child may also be included in the log as long as your student read for the required 10-15 min Monday through Thursday.

Thanks,

Kim Spatz.

Dear Parents,

I hope you all enjoyed our unexpected long break. Welcome back!

Kennedy will be our Star of the Week again this week and Aidan will be Star next week, barring any more weather storms!

The children filled our blurt bean jar to the top on Tuesday so it is definitely time for a new classroom pet as their reward. Ask the children about it!

In math this week, studentswill learnplace value and double-digit addition with and without regrouping. We will use manipulatives (tens sticks and ones cubes) to show how our place value system works and to show why regrouping (aka carrying, borrowing) is necessary.

In spelling and phonics,we are again putting words in the past tense by adding “ed.” This week we learn three new rules for adding “ed”: When thelast letter of a word is immediately preceded by a short vowel, then the last letter is doubled when “ed” is added e.g. hop becomes hopped. If the last letter of a word is preceded by a long vowel it is not doubled e.g. rain becomes rained. Also, if the last letter is an “e”, then only a “d” is added e.g. hope becomes hoped. We will review last week’s rule for adding “ed” to a word that ends in “y” but we will not include last week’s words on this week’s spelling test.

In science this week, we will learn about the parts of a flower and the process of pollination. We will learn how flowers depend on bees and birds and other animals for the pollination process and how bees and other animals depend on plants for survival. We will draw and paint pictures of lilies, showing the different parts of the flower.

In writing we will write poems about our lilies using “juicy” verbs and adjectives. We will learn about the literary technique of personification and many will use this technique in their poems.

In religion, we will learn about the different kinds of writing used in the Bible: stories, poems, letters, and historical records. We will learn about the two main parts of the Bible: The Old (Hebrew) Testament and the New Testament. And we will read and discuss some of our favorite Old Testament and New Testament stories.

In social studies will learn about the goods and services provided in our neighborhood and examine a map of the Sellwood business district. I would also like to acknowledge the importance of Martin Luther King, Jr. and his struggle to ensure that all people be treated fairly. One of our second grade social studies content standards is to “evaluate how individuals, groups, and communities manage conflict and promote justice.”Martin Luther King Jr. is an excellent example of someone who was committed to managing conflict without violence and who promoted justice. He was also deeply committed to following Jesus’ teaching. Our MLK activities, however, must wait ‘til next week.

Blessings,

Kim Spatz
