How to give your secondary teachers

access to your e-portfolio

This helpsheet explains what you have to do to give staff at your secondary school membership of the e-portfolioyou created at primary school.

If you have forgotten your Glow password over the summer you will need to ask a teacher to reset this for you.

Stage 1 – Adding your teachers as members

You’re now going to add all of the teachers in your school as members of the Glow Group where you created your e-portfolio blog. This is so that they can view your blog and add comments to it in the same way that your primary teachers could.

  1. Log in to Glow. You will see the Glow Lightscreen, similar to this:

  1. Click on the Favouritesbutton and the Glow Group you created to hold your e-portfolio blog should be at the top of the list. It will either say your name or My e-portfolio depending on what you called it when you created it. Click on this Glow Group to enter it.
  2. At the top of your Glow Group click Advanced Settings.
  1. ClickSite Settings.
  2. ClickGo to Site Administration.
  1. Click Manage users.
  1. At the moment,you and your primary teachers are the members of your Glow Group.To add your secondary teacher(s), clickAdd Users.
  2. Delete the text that is currently in the ‘Choose Users’ box, and type in the text your teacher gives you. It will look something like this:

1234567-teachingstaff

The number will be different for your school, so make sure you type it in correctly.

Your teacher might ask to you add some other users, for example, 1234567-nonteachingstaff, or 1234567-teachingassistantstaff, which would allow other staff in your school to see your e-portfolio.

If you add more than one group, separate them with semicolons, like this

  1. Click in the box next to Administrator.This means that the staff will be able to add to your e-portfolio.
  2. Click Next.
  3. If you get any red error messages, clickBack and check the details you entered.
  4. Click Finish.
  5. Click the Back to Noticeboard link in the top left-hand corner of the next page to return to the main page of your Glow Group.

Stage 2 – Adding a link to your e-portfolio to the school Glow Group

  1. In the Blog web part click View.

  1. Your blog will open in a new window. Maximise this window to make it full screen.

You arenow going to place a link to your blog in the school Glow Group, so that the teachers in the secondary school will be able to get into it.

  1. Click in the address bar at the top of the screen.

  1. Highlight the whole web address and copy it. (Either click the right mouse button and click Copy or go to Edit and then Copy.)
  2. Minimize the window with your blog in it, to return to your Glow Group.
  3. In the left-hand navigation bar click on My Glow Groups.
  4. Scroll down to find the name of yourschool’s e-portfolios Glow Group. Click on the Glow Group name eg
  1. click on the page tab for your year, for example:
  1. Find the web part for your class, for example:
  1. In the web part click New Item.
  2. In the URL box delete the text that is shown.
  1. Once the box is empty, paste in the web address you copied earlier. (Either click the right mouse button and click Paste, or go to Edit and then Paste.)
  2. In the next box type your name, with your surname first and then a space and then your first name.When you have done this, click Save and Close.
  1. Your name will now appear in the list of links. Click on it to make sure that the link works and that you are taken to your e-portfolio blog.If your link doesn’t work, let your teacher know, so that they can help you.
  2. Click the back icon on the browser to return to the school e-portfolio Glow Group.

Stage 3: Adding a button to the Glow Light screen

The link you’ve put in the Glow Group will help the teachers to see your e-portfolio. You’re now going to make a button on the Glow Light screen to give you an easy way to get to your e-portfolio each time.

You may already have an e-portfolio button on your Glow Light screen. If so, you do not need to do the next section. If you do not, then follow these steps:

  1. Click the Glow logo to return to the Glow Light screen.
  2. Click the Settings icon.
  1. In the Button text box, type in My e-portfolio.
  2. In the URL box, paste in the link you copied earlier.
  3. Click the box next to Open in new window.
  4. Click Add Button.
  5. Click Doneat the top of the screen.
  6. A new button will be displayed on your Glow Light screen.

You will use this button in the future to get to your

e-portfolio. Click the button now to make sure it works.
