You will be required to schedule 1-12 hour date with a high volume hospital site, 1-12 hour date with a medium/low volume hospital site, and 1-12 hour date with a medium/high volume transport service (for a total of 3-12 hour shifts minimum).

II. Course Description

Provides the EMT student with the clinical experience required for the initial NREMT certification.

III. Student Learning Outcomes, Competencies, and Skills

Student will be able to successfully demonstrate skills as prescribed by the training center and allowed by the clinical site.

Upon successful course, co-requisite completion, and passing grade on NREMT Practical exam, the student will be eligible to apply to the National Registry to take the Computer Based National Registry Exam. This exam is not part of the course and must be scheduled and paid for by the student after successful completion of the course. Successful passage of the National Registry Computer based test is required in order to apply for the EMT Basic Certification by the State of Colorado.

IV. IDEA Objectives

1. Gaining factual knowledge of the EMS field including terminology, classifications, methods, and trends.

2. Learning to apply course material (to improve thinking, problem solving, and decisions) in the pre-hospital setting.

3. Acquiring hands on skills for working with others as a member of a team including other EMS professionals, both pre-hospital and hospital.

V. Evaluation Methods and Class Management

The student will be evaluated by skills evaluation, Clinical paperwork completed and turned in, and Preceptor Evaluation Form. Attendance is expected to be 100%. Students must complete 30 hours of Clinical time to include 20 patient contacts as scheduled at previously approved sites coordinated through CMC Clinical Coordinator. Grading will be A -90-100, B 80-90, C 70-80, D 60-70, and F 60 or less. Grades will be based upon the following: 30 Clinical hours, 25%, 10 Patient Contacts, 25%, preceptor evaluations 25%, and patient reports including oral report, 25%. The student must have a minimum of a “B” to be able to sit for the National Registry EMT Exam. Preparation and participation will be incorporated into the grading through skill observation, oral explanation, advanced clinical scheduling and adherence to the clinical guidelines. Students are expected to complete any prerequisites described by the clinical site prior to Clinical experience.

NOTE: Clinical scheduling is based on availability at the clinical sites. As a CMC student you will be a guest at these facilities and it is important to display professionalism at ALL TIMES.

Clinical will begin only after the background check is completed and the instructor has approved the student. Students must wear Class Clinical Shirt, black pants, and black polished shoes and bring their own stethoscope, safety glasses and wrist watch as part of the clinical experience.

**NOTE: Due to multiple programs utilizing these clinical sites there can be no cancelling or rescheduling requests granted with the exception of an extreme emergency.

·  Any request to cancel a scheduled clinical time or failure to show for a scheduled clinical time can result in removal from the program.

·  Any incident where the student is found to act unprofessionally WILL result in the student’s removal from the EMT program.

Grading Criteria defined as follows:

Clinical hours (25%):

30 hours are required to receive the full 25%

Less than 30 hours will result in a 0

Patient Contacts (25%):

30 patient contacts for full 25%

20 patient contacts for 20%

10 patient contacts for 17.5%

Less than 10 will result in a 0 (Student cannot pass without 10 patient contacts)

Preceptor Evaluations (25%):

Each sheet has a total of 35 points

28-35 total points for 25%

21-27 points for 20%

14-20 points for 10%

Any points 13 and below will result in a 0

Patient Reports (25%):

Students are required to write a PCR for each patient contact.

30 PCR’s for 25%

20 PCR’s for 20%

10 PCR’s for 17.5%

Less than 10 PCR’s will result in a 0

A student judged to have engaged in academic misconduct as defined in the “Academic Policies and Requirements” section of the Colorado Mountain College Student Handbook will, at a minimum, receive a “zero” for the work in question. The student may also be removed from the class, resulting in a failing grade. The instructor may alter any, or all, of this syllabus during the semester as the learning environment requires. Students will be notified in writing of changes. Attendance at all class meetings is expected.

VI. Attendance and No-show Reporting

Attendance and early engagement are important elements for your success in this course. All students who do not attend the first class(es) or meet early attendance requirements must be reported by the instructor to the Registrar’s Office. Financial aid students who do not attend the first class(es) or meet early attendance requirements will be dropped from the course and may not receive financial assistance (http://coloradomtn.edu/financial_aid).

VIII. Withdrawal from this Course

Students wishing to withdraw from this course must INITIATE the course withdrawal/drop process at the site Registration Office.

This class could be cancelled one week prior to the census date if a sufficient number of students are not enrolled by that date.

IX. Grading System & Options

Information about grading is available in the Colorado Mountain College catalog. Grades will be posted to https://webadvisor.coloradomtn.edu/ by Thursday of the week following the last day of classes at the end of each semester. After logging into WebAdvisor students should click on “Grades” under the Academic Profile heading.


After selecting the term they will see the classes in which they are registered and the corresponding grades.

X. Required Course Materials

This class is in conjunction with the EMT-B class. Failure to successfully complete this section will result in failure of the EMT-B class.

Clinical will begin only after the background check is completed and the instructor has approved the student. Students must wear Class Clinical Shirt, black pants, and black polished shoes and bring their own stethoscope, safety glasses and wrist watch as part of the clinical experience.

This course requires bending, kneeling, standing and possible outdoor presentations. The student may expect, and be prepared, for the possibility of exposure to a variety of conditions as part of the Skills experience.

XII. Other Information

This class must be taken in conjunction with CMC Fall Course Titles: EMT Basic Course Code: EMS-145 and EMT Basic Lab EMS-146 as well as be certified in BLS for Healthcare Providers.

National Registry EMT Basic testing must be scheduled after the successful completion of this course as part of the certification process. Additionally the student will need to complete a Background Check and application to the Colorado Department of Health and Environment (CDPHE) for certification as an EMT in the State of Colorado. Completion of this course does not guarantee that the student will meet all CDPHE requirements for certification as an EMT Basic.

In the event of injury during class the student must follow CMC Worker’s Compensation Procedures. A copy of these procedures will be given to the student on the first day of class.
