I am Tian from China. I’m studying at the University of Sydney, a place where I have spent almost 4 years. This year is my 5th year in Sydney and I know this year is going to be a bit different, because I joined ISLA.

Personally, I found the most valuable experience so far is the way ISLAhas changed me.Since it officially started, it has been 10 weeks. And if you are good at math, I have spent 150 hours with my ISLAteam. Staring from the intensive training sessions, I have seen myself growingso fast interms of not only practical skills, but also interpersonal skills. For example, it has reshaped my understanding of leadership, and to my surprise, I have learned that people from various backgrounds can actually work perfectly as a team, like us.

More importantly, I have built a better understanding of myself in terms of my leadership style, my personality type, and who I truly am. Despite the cultural difference, I was so impressed by how much we are in common, not only our interests and values, but also our passion for international student community. I saw many of my teammates struggled to balance study, work and family, but at the same time, they didn’t hesitate at all to contribute to the team.

That is how I spent these 150 hours listening, watching, and being inspired by the words and actions of people. Through interactions with City of Sydney staff, I also sawhow dedicated they are to make a better life, not for themselves but for the local communities. Because of ISLA, I have acquired the courage to take initiative and face every challenge without being afraid to lose. That is why I want to share my experiences in ISLA to a broader audience of international students, telling them that Sydney is such a wonderful place that embraces cultural differenceand facilitates personal growth. I want to encourage them to explore the opportunities provided by the City of Sydney, encouraging them that you can make a difference in your life, and you are not alone, because you are here, in the City of Sydney.

Finally, I want to thank Susana and those who put great effort in developing ISLA program, for providing such an extraordinary journey for us. And thank you my ISLA family, I love you all and let’s get ready for this wonderful year.

Thank you!
