June 2016
I am delighted to welcome you to Portishead Junior Football Club.
Portishead Junior Football Club was formed in 1974 to provide the opportunity for children to play football from the age of 5 to 16 in a safe environment and as cheaply as possible. The initial set up involved a small number of age groups (less than 6) who with the help of the mainly parents and volunteers who set up the club to achieve its objective as in above.
The club today has changed very little from its inception as all of the management committee, managers and coaches are all volunteers who all believe the principles of the club and the objective remains the same. What has changed to the club over the years is its size, with the club now having over 20 different boys and girls teams ranging from 5 to 16. The current total of players involved in the club is over 420 and continues to grow.
The club is an important part of the local community with the players living in the Portishead area. The club has close ties with all of the local primary schools and also Gordano Secondary School as most players attend school at one of the local primary schools or Gordano. The club actively encourages it Managers and Coaches to select players from the Portishead area in order to retain the Club’s policy of trying to develop local children’s footballing skills and ability.
In 2002 the club was awarded the FA Standard Charter Club status and we therefore operate to the highest standards set by the FA for youth football clubs. We take the standard very seriously and all players, managers, coaches and spectators are expected to adhere to our code of conduct at all times. Our Standard Charter status is reviewed by the FA on an annual basis and since 2002 we have met with of the Standards requirements each year.
The Managers and Coaches
Portishead Junior Football Club sets the highest standards for its managers and coaches in order to achieve its objectives. In order to become a manager or coach the individual must obtain a Level 1 FA Coaching qualification which involves attending a course over a period of four weeks (36 hours in total) which as well as covering football coaching also includes Child Welfare Issues and First Aid.
Where do we play ?
As a result of our close ties with Gordano Secondary, we play all of our games at Gordano School playing fields in Portishead. This is also the venue for summer training and in Winter we use the all-weather astro pitch at Gordano School. Our annual summer tournament is also held at Gordano School.
The Players
These range from 5 to 16 both boys and girls mainly from the local community. Due to the rules the club sets the players learn discipline, working in a team as well as being given the opportunity to enjoy exercise in fun and positive environment.
As a club we encourage all parents to support good play and sportsmanship , irrespective of the opposition and look to praise effort and performance more than results.
As parents there is always a job that needs doing and help is never turned down. You do not necessarily have to get involved in the football side as there a number of essential administrative jobs that need to be completed on a regular basis that would take less than an hour a week. If you would like to get involved in any capacity then please let us know. You will be given all of the support and help you need to enable this fantastic football club to continue for another 40 years !!
