HYDRONIC PUMPS

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.01 SUMMARY

A.Section Includes: Include labor, materials, equipment, and accessories to furnish and install pumping equipment and make connections to systems served.

B.Description of Work:

1.Extent of HVAC pumps required by this Section are indicated on Drawings and Schedules, and by requirements of this Section

2.Types of pumps specified in this Section include the following:

a.Frame Mounted End Suction

3.Pumps furnished as part of factory fabricated equipment are specified as part of equipment assembly in other Division 23 sections.

4.Refer to Division 26 sections for the following work; not work of this Section:

a.Power Supply Wiring From Power Source to Power Connection On Pumps; include starters, disconnects, and required electrical devices, except where specified as furnished, or factory installed, by manufacturer

b.Interlock Wiring Between Pumps, and Between Pumps and Field Installed Control Devices

c.Interlock Wiring; specified as factory installed is work of this Section

1.02 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A.Manufacturer Qualifications: Firms regularly engaged in manufacture of generaluse centrifugal pumps with characteristics, sizes, and capacities required, whose products have been in satisfactory use in similar service for not less than 5years.

B.Codes and Sandards:

1.HI Compliance: Design, manufacture, and install HVAC pumps in accordance with HI"Hydraulic Institute Standards".

2.UL Compliance: Design, manufacture, and install HVAC pumps in accordance with UL778, "Motor Operated Water Pumps".

3.UL and NEMA Compliance: Provide electric motors and components, which are listed and labeled by UL and which meet NEMA Standards.

1.03 SUBMITTALS

A.Product Data: Submit manufacturer's pump specifications, installation, and start-up instructions, and current accurate pump characteristic performance curves with selection points clearly indicated.

B.Wiring Diagrams: Submit manufacturer's electrical requirements for power supply wiring to HVAC pumps. Submit manufacturer's laddertype wiring diagrams for interlock and control wiring. Clearly differentiate between portions of wiring that are factory installed and portions to be field installed.

C.Maintenance Data: Submit maintenance data and spare parts lists for each type of pump, control, and accessory, including troubleshooting maintenance guide. Include this data, Product Data, Shop Drawings, and wiring diagrams in maintenance manual in accordance with Section 013300.

1.04 PRODUCT DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

A.Handling: Handle HVAC pumps and components carefully to prevent damage, breaking, denting, and scoring. Do not install damaged HVAC pumps or components; replace with new.

B.Storage: Store HVAC pumps and components in a clean, dry place. Protect pumps from weather, dirt, fumes, water, construction debris, and physical damage.

C.Unloading: Meet manufacturer's rigging and installation instructions for unloading HVAC pumps and moving them to final location.

G.Triple Duty Valves: Do not use triple duty valves for this Project.

2.02 MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT

A.Condition: Pumps and related equipment shall be as specified and scheduled in Part3 of this Section.

B.Nameplates: Each major item of equipment shall have a standard nameplate securely affixed in a conspicuous place showing the serial number and the manufacturer's name and address. In addition, the nameplate for each pump shall show the capacity in gallons per minute at rated speed as the minimum information required by NEMA MG 110.38.

C.Guards: Provide 20gauge galvanized steel guards over belt drives, drive shafts, and couplings with 16gauge galvanized 3/8inch mesh over belts and large areas. Guards shall have angle iron bracing and angle iron supports bolted to floor or equipment. Guards over pump and motor shafts and couplings shall be easily removable for checking and servicing.

D.Motor Driver: Motor driver shall be selected in accordance with the pump’s nonoverloading performance characteristics. Motor horsepower rating shall be chosen in keeping with the pump's possible peak horsepower requirements. In sizing the motor, the maximum brake horsepower may not exceed the motor’s nominal nameplate rating.

1.Motor shall be mounted with pump on baseplate at pump manufacturer's plant and shipped out as (1)unit.

E.Seals: Internally flushed seals shall be mechanical type glycol seal, suitable for continuous operation with a temperature range of minus 20degreesF to plus 250degreesF, and a pH range of 7to 12.5, for applications up to a 50percent glycol, 50percent water concentration. The seals shall be capable of being serviced without disconnecting the pump from piping.

F.Impellers: Provide material and labor to shave impellers after initial balance report on pumps with no speed adjustment, and larger than 10 horsepower motors.

G.Pumps: Provide factory tested pumps, thoroughly cleaned, and painted with (1)coat of machinery enamel prior to shipment. Type, size, and capacity of each pump are listed in pump schedule. Provide pumps of same type by same manufacturer.

2.03 STANDARD DUTY IN-LINE PUMPS

A.General Requirements: Pumps shall be inline type, close coupled, single stage design, for installation in vertical or horizontal position, and shall be capable of being serviced without disturbing piping connections.

B.Casing: Pump casing shall be vertical split case design and shall be constructed of Class30 cast iron.

1.Pump casing shall be gauge tapping at the suction and the discharge nozzles, and shall include vent and drain ports.

2.Pumps shall be rated for minimum of 175psi working at 225degreesF.

C.Impeller: The impeller shall be of cast bronze, enclosed type, dynamically balanced, keyed to the shaft, and secured by a locking cap screw.

D.Seals: The liquid cavity shall be sealed off at the motor shaft by internally flushed mechanical seal with ceramic seal seat and carbon seal ring, suitable for continuous operation at 225degreesF. A bronze shaft sleeve shall completely cover the wetted area under the seal.

E.Bearings: Motor shall have heavy-duty grease lubricated ball bearings with a minimum life of L10200,000 hours, completely adequate for the maximum load for which the pump is designed.

F.Electric Motors: Each pump shall be driven by a continuous duty, open dripproof electric motor. Refer to Section 230513, Common Motor Requirements for HVAC Equipment, or the Equipment Schedule for voltage and rpm requirements. Refer to Section 230513 for motor minimum efficiency.

1.On pumps that have a variable frequency drive, provide factory mounted motor shaft ground system. Motor shall be invertor duty type motor.

G.Test and Finish: Each pump shall be factory tested. Pump shall then be thoroughly cleaned and painted with at least (1)coat of highgrade machinery enamel prior to shipment.

2.04 SENSORLESS VARIABLE SPEED STANDARD DUTY IN-LINE PUMPS

A.General Requirements: Pumps shall be inline type, close coupled, single stage design, for installation in vertical or horizontal position, and shall be capable of being serviced without disturbing piping connections.

B.Casing: Pump casing shall be vertical split case design and shall be constructed of Class30 cast iron.

1.Pump casing shall be gauge tapping at the suction and the discharge nozzles, and shall include vent and drain ports.

2.Pumps shall be rated for minimum of 175psi working at 225degreesF.

C.Impeller: The impeller shall be of cast bronze, enclosed type, dynamically balanced, keyed to the shaft, and secured by a locking cap screw.

D.Seals: The liquid cavity shall be sealed off at the motor shaft by internally flushed mechanical seal with ceramic seal seat and carbon seal ring, suitable for continuous operation at 225degreesF. A bronze shaft sleeve shall completely cover the wetted area under the seal.

E.Bearings: Motor shall have heavy-duty grease lubricated ball bearings with a minimum life of L10200,000 hours, completely adequate for the maximum load for which the pump is designed.

F.Electric Motors: The driving motor shall be of squirrel cage induction type incorporating an integrated (in standard terminal box position) variable frequency drive (VFD), vertical solid shaft with TEFC/IP55 enclosure, and shall be of physical dimensions such that the pump size envelope is no larger than the fixed speed equivalent. Refer to Section 230513, Electric Motor Schedule, or the Equipment Schedule for voltage and rpm requirements. Refer to Section 230513 for motor minimum efficiency.

G.Integrated VFD: The integrated VFD shall be of the VVCPWM type providing near unity displacement power factor (cos Ø) without the need for external power factor correction capacitors at all loads and speeds. The VFD shall incorporate DC link chokes for the reduction of mains borne harmonic currents and to reduce the DC link ripple current thereby increasing the DC link capacitors lifetime. RFI filters will be fitted as standard to ensure the VFD meets low emission and immunity requirements. Provide an Open Protocol – LonWorks, BACnet, Modbus Device with each VFD.

1.VFD and motor protection shall include motor phase to phase fault, motor phase to ground fault, loss of supply phase, overvoltage, undervoltage, motor overtemperature, inverter overload, and overcurrent.

2.Sensorless control software shall be embedded in the integrated VFD to provide automatic speed control in variable volume systems without the need for pump mounted (internal/external) or remotely mounted differential pressure sensor. The default operating mode under sensorless control shall be Quadratic Pressure Control (QPC) whereby head reduction with reducing flow will be according to a quadratic control curve, the head at minimum flow being 40percent of the design duty head. Control mode setting and minimum/maximum head setpoints shall be user adjustable via an optional programming interface.

H.Test and Finish: Each pump shall be factory tested. Pump shall then be thoroughly cleaned and painted with at least (1)coat of highgrade machinery enamel prior to shipment.

2.05 FLEX-COUPLED BASE MOUNTED PUMPS

A.Type: Base mounted pumps shall be single stage, end suction centrifugal type of vertical split case design, of cast iron and bronze construction; designed, except where otherwise specified, to service internal components without disturbing pump volute or motor alignment.

B.Pump Casing: Pump casing shall be close grained cast iron and shall be designed to permit replacement of wearing parts. Pump casings shall be of uniform quality and free from blowholes, porosity, hard spots, shrinkage defects, cracks, and other injurious defects.

1.Pump casing shall have gauge tappings at the suction and the discharge nozzles, and shall include vent and drain ports.

2.Pumps shall be rated for minimum of 175psi working pressure at 225degreesF.

C.Impellers: Impellers shall be of enclosed design and shall be constructed of bronze, carefully finished with smooth water passageways, and shall be statically and dynamically balanced. Impellers shall be securely keyed to the pump shaft. Provisions shall be made for vertical impeller adjustment at the top of the motor. Impellers on verticalsplit case pumps shall be additionally secured with a selflocking nut. End size impellers shall be allowed only at the Architect/Engineer's option.

D.Shaft: Shaft shall be of high grade steel accurately machined and shall be of sufficient size and strength to perform the work required. Provide bronze renewable shaft sleeves for protection of the shaft in contact with water or packing. Key shaft sleeves to the pump shaft.

E.Drive: Couplings shall be of the heavy-duty flexible type, keyed and locked to the shaft.

1.Coupling and drive shaft shall be covered with a factory installed pump guard.

F.Balance: Rotating parts of equipment shall operate throughout the required range without excessive end thrust, vibration or noise.

G.Bearings: Bearings shall be ball or roller type and the main bearings shall take all radial and end thrust with a minimum life of L10200,000 hours. Pumps that depend only on hydraulic balance to overcome end thrust shall not be acceptable.

1.Lubrication: Where applicable, provide grease type bearings with fittings for a grease gun.

H.Base Plates: Provide centrifugal pumps with a common base for mounting each pump and driving unit of the pump on the same base. Construct each base of cast iron with a raised lip tapped for drainage, or of welded steel shapes with suitable drainage pan.

I.Electric Motors: Each pump shall be driven by a continuous duty, open dripproof electric motor. Refer to Section 230513, Common Motor Requirements for HVAC Equipment, or the Equipment Schedule for voltage and rpm requirements. Refer to Section 230513 for motor minimum efficiency.

1.On pumps that have a variable frequency drive, provide factory mounted motorshaft ground system. Motor shall be invertor duty type motor.

2.06 CLOSE COUPLED BASE MOUNTED PUMPS

A.General Requirements: Pumps shall be close coupled, single stage end suction type, and shall be capable of being serviced without disturbing piping connections.

B.Casing: Pump casing shall be vertical split case design and shall be constructed of Class30 cast iron.

1.Pump casing shall have gauge tappings at the suction and the discharge nozzles, and shall include vent and drain ports.

2.Pumps shall be rated for minimum of 175psi working pressure at 225degreesF.

C.Impeller: Impeller shall be cast bronze enclosed type, dynamically balanced, keyed to the shaft, and secured by a locking cap screw.

D.Seals: The liquid cavity shall be sealed off at the motor shaft by an internally flushed mechanical seal with ceramic seal seat of at least 98percent alumina oxide content, and carbon seal ring, suitable for continuous operation at 225degreesF. A replaceable shaft sleeve of bronze alloy shall completely cover the wetted area under the seal.

E.Bearings: Motor shall have heavy-duty grease lubricated ball bearings with a minimum life of L10200,000 hours, completely adequate for the maximum load for which the pump is designed.

F.Electric Motors: Each pump shall be driven by a continuous duty, open dripproof electric motor. Refer to Section 230513, Common Motor Requirements for HVAC Equipment, or the Equipment Schedule for voltage and rpm requirements. Refer to Section 230513 for motor minimum efficiency.

2.07 DOUBLE SUCTION VERTICAL SPLIT CASE PUMPS

A.General Requirements: Pumps shall be capable of being serviced without disturbing piping connections.

B.Casing: Pump casing shall be vertical split case design and shall be constructed of Class30 cast iron.

1.Pumps shall be rated for minimum of 175psi working pressure at 225degreesF.

C.Impeller: Impeller shall be of the enclosed double suction type in bronze construction and shall be dynamically balanced for quiet operation. The impeller shall be keyed to the shaft and secured with a slightly press and suitable locknut arrangement.

D.Seals: Internally flushed seals shall be mechanical type with ceramic seal and carbon seal ring, suitable for continuous operation at 225degreesF. The seals shall be capable of being serviced without disconnecting the pump from piping.

E.Bearings: The pump bearings shall be the regreaseable camlock ball bearing type with provision for purging or flushing through the bearing surface with a minimum life of L10200,000 hours, and capable of being inspected by removing the bearing covers. The shaft shall be of 188 stainless steel.

F.Coupler: A flexible, center dropout spacer type coupler, capable of absorbing torsional vibration, shall be employed between the pump and motor. Coupler shall be shielded by a coupler guard securely fastened to the base.

G.Electric Motors: Each pump shall be driven by a continuous duty, open dripproof electric motor. Refer to Section 230513, Common Motor Requirements for HVAC Equipment, or the Equipment Schedule for voltage and rpm requirements. Refer to Section 230513 for motor minimum efficiency.

1.On pumps that have a variable frequency drive, provide factory mounted motorshaft ground system. Motor shall be invertor duty type motor.

H.Support: Pump and motor shall be mounted on a common base plate of heavy structural steel design and securely welded cross members and open grouting area. Each pump shall be factory tested. Pump shall then be thoroughly cleaned and painted with at least (1)coat of highgrade machinery enamel prior to shipment.
