DESCRIPTION

The purpose of HUSR 400 is the examination and integration of the ethical and legal standards related to critical professional issues for counselors/human service workers involved in practice, training, supervision and consultation.

CSHSE ACCREDITATION:

This course partially fulfills the requirements set forth by the Council for Standards in Human Services Education (CSHSE). As such, this course also helps fulfill the requirements for the Human Services-Board Certified Practitioner credential. The specific standards being met are listed below each of the following objectives, as well as the learning activities that help fulfill those standards and learning objectives.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

The student will develop the following competencies:

  1. Be able to respond to ethical dilemmas by a decision-making process.

CSHSE 13.b. The range of populations served and needs addressed by human services professionals.

CSHSE 13.c. The major models used to conceptualize and integrate prevention, maintenance, intervention, rehabilitation, and healthy functioning.

CSHSE 15.a. Analysis and assessment of the needs of clients or client groups.

CSHSE 15.b. Development of goals, design, and implementation of a plan of action.

CSHSE 15.c. Evaluation of the outcomes of the plan and the impact on the client or client group.

CSHSE 15.d. Program design.

CSHSE 15.e. Program implementation.

CSHSE 15.f. Program evaluation.

CSHSE16.a. Theory and knowledge bases of prevention, intervention, and maintenance strategies to achieve maximum autonomy and functioning.

CSHSE 16.b. Skills to facilitate appropriate direct services and interventions related to specific client or client group goals.

CSHSE 17.a. Clarifying expectations.

CSHSE 17.b. Dealing effectively with conflict.

  1. Be able to communicate an understanding of the laws for counselors/human service workers.

CSHSE 12.h. Processes to analyze, interpret, and effect policies and laws at local, state, and national levels that influence services delivery systems.

  1. Be able to identify the different major components of ethical codes for professional counselors/human service workers.

CSHSE11.d. How public and private attitudes influence legislation and the interpretation of policies related to human services.

CSHSE 14.e. Applying maintenance of client confidentiality and appropriate use of client data

CSHSE14.i. Utilizing research findings and other information for community education and public relations.

CSHSE16.a. Theory and knowledge bases of prevention, intervention, and maintenance strategies to achieve maximum autonomy and functioning.

CSHSE16.b. Skills to facilitate appropriate direct services and interventions related to specific client or client group goals.

CSHSE 17.d. Developing and sustaining behaviors that are congruent with the values and ethics of the profession.

CSHSE 19.d. The worth and uniqueness of individuals including culture, ethnicity, race, class, gender, religion, ability, sexual orientation, and other expressions of diversity.

CSHSE 19. f. Interdisciplinary team approaches to problem solving.

PREREQUISITE

All students must have completed Human Services 101, Introduction to Human Services, with a satisfactory grade.

There is one required textbook and one required workbook. You are expected to read the assigned readings prior to class time. Any additional readings will be made available online or placed on reserve in the library.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

1. Since the class is online, participation in online assignments is expected.. Remember, online participation is an important part of your grade.

2. Students must show knowledge of having read the assigned readings as evidenced by class discussion, written assignments, and examinations.

3. It is important that you bring your own issues and concerns, show respect for others presentations, interact on matters raised in the discussion forum, and participate in online discussions.

WRITTEN REPORTS AND CLASS ASSIGNMENTS

1. Term Paper: The paper will focus on major topics of the course: ethical decision making, analysis of your personal values, the challenge of maintaining appropriate boundaries, and critique of and reactions to NOHS, ACA Ethical Standards, and other professional codes of professional ethics. Specificguidelines for the required paper are given under written assignments on the course website.

2. Midterm Examination consisting of multiple choice questions and an essay question, covering chapters 1-6 of required textbook, online lessons, and discussion board topics.

3. Online Participation: You will be expected to participate in the discussion board on a regular basis, engaging each topic with original responses and replies to other student participants.

4. Final Examination consisting of multiple choice questions, covering chapters 7-13 of required textbook, online lessons, and discussion board topics.

3. Papers turned in after the due date will be deducted 10 points per week. If you turn in a paper or take an exam late, it will not be returned until the end of the semester.
