Humble Early Screening Inventory (HERSI) Benchmark Targets

All general and special education students in Grades K-2 (except for students served in PPCD, Life Skills or Applied Skills), should be administered the District’s Universal Screening Assessment: K-2 Humble Early Reading Inventory (HERSI) a minimum of two times per year. Each student must have BOY (entry) and EOY data, regardless of their registration date.

DEVELOPMENTAL READING ASSESSMENT (DRA) GUIDELINES
BEGINNING OF THE YEAR
The complete HERSI assessment is given to all students, returning or new, regardless of their entry date.
Identify student’s instructional text level
  • (93%-96%) accuracy with DRA Comprehension score of 16+.
  • Do not use the DRA texts beyond the end of the year benchmark.
/ For a student who is already at the EOY benchmark text level after being assessed at the beginning of the year, ask the following questions prior to moving up in text levels:
  • Has the student been assessed in fiction and nonfiction?
  • Is the student on an independent level on fiction and nonfiction texts?
  • Is their writing closely aligned with reading text level?
  • Is the student reading fluently? Think about their intonation, expression, phrasing and reading rate.
The following assessments may be used if needed to continue assessing beyond the benchmark:
  • Books from the Guided Reading library
  • Alternate benchmark assessments

MID-YEAR
  • Kindergarten: Word Test, Writing Vocabulary, Dictation, and DRA Assessment to be completed from the middle of November through December
  • First Grade: DRA Assessment to be completed during the month of January
  • Second Grade: If there are academic concerns about a student, mid-year assessment is necessary.
  • Second Grade: Students in a bilingual program are given the DRA, Word Test and Spelling assessments in English. Assessments to be completed during the month of January

END OF THE YEAR
The HERSI assessment is given to all students. Follow District HERSI Timeline (Who, What, When).
Identify student’s independent text level
  • (97%-100%) accuracy with DRA Comprehension score of 16+.
  • Do not use the DRA texts beyond the end of the year benchmark.
The following assessments may be used if needed to continue assessing beyond the benchmark:
  • Books from the Guided Reading library
  • Alternate benchmark assessments
2nd grade Bilingual students:
  • The complete HERSI is administered in Spanish to all bilingual students.
  • DRA, Word Test & Spelling are also administered in English.
/ If the teacher has documentation that the student consistently exceeds the grade level/text level benchmarks, (see criteria below*) the end of year text level assessment looks like:

*Criteria for text level benchmark:
