Humanities and Social Sciences Postgraduate Scholarships

The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciencesat Newcastle University is offering a number of partial scholarship awards for 2018 entry to assist non UK applicants from the European Union with good qualifications to study for a postgraduate Master’s degree (including MLitt programmes). The awards will be credited to the student’s fee account to reduce the overall cost of tuition fees.

Terms and Conditions

  1. To be considered for awards, applicants must have been offered a place to study on their chosen Master’s degree programme at the University’s Newcastle city centre campus for the 2018/19 academic year.
  1. Eligible applicants will be considered automatically for awards. Awards may be allocated early in the application cycle; early course applications are therefore encouraged.
  1. The value of the awards will be £2,000 and will be credited to the student’s tuition fee account.
  1. Postgraduate applicants must be non UKEuropean Union nationals and must be classed as EU for fee paying purposes. UK applicants assessed as home for fee paying purposes and international applicants assessed as international for fee paying purposes are not eligible for these awards.
  1. Scholarship offers will be made to eligible applicants who meet the following criteria:
  • Hold the equivalent of a first class UK honours degree and have an offer for an eligible taught postgraduate degree programme within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.
  • Applicants who have not completed their degree at the time of their scholarship offer will be considered for a conditionalscholarship award based upon their final grades.
  1. Once scholarship awards are issued, applicants must accept their scholarship offer within the timeframe specified in their scholarship offer letter.
  1. To receive awards applicants must become registered students at Newcastle University in the 2018/19 academic year for a full-time Master’s degree programme. Awards cannot be deferred to later academic years.
  1. Fully sponsored EU students do not qualify for these awards. A fully-funded scholarship or full sponsorship covers fees and maintenance. The University reserves the right to suspend payment and recover any scholarship amounts already made to EU students with full funding.
  1. Scholarships will not be confirmed unless applicants satisfy all conditions related to their scholarship offer, even if they are still accepted to study at Newcastle University.
  1. Successful applicants cannot be in receipt of a Humanities and Social SciencesPostgraduate Scholarship award AND an award from the Women in Leadership Scholarships. Applicants may apply for and/or be considered for more than one award but if successful in the Humanities and Social Sciences Postgraduate Scholarship and the scheme listed then they would receive the higher of the awards with the lower value award reallocated to another applicant. The list of schemes is not exhaustive and applicants should check the regulations for all funding opportunities to which they apply to ensure eligibility.
  1. Some School and Faculty awards may be held in conjunction with central university merit awards.
  1. The following applicants are not eligible to receive Humanities and Social SciencesPostgraduate Scholarship awards:
  • Pathway students progressing to the University from INTO
  • MPhil, doctoral (PhD, Integrated PhD), Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma, Postgraduate Certificate in Education, online (e-learning) degree programme applicants
  • Applicants for the Masters of Architecture (MArch);Finance, Accounting and Business Graduate Diploma; Operations Management (Dual Award) MSc/MSc; Advanced International Business Management (Dual Award) MSc/MSc; Advanced International Business Management and Marketing (Dual Award) MSc/MSc; and the MBA
  • Current students, registered at the University who have already commenced their postgraduate degree at the time of the award. Awards cannot be made retrospectively.
  • Students transferring or repeating courses
  1. Should a scholarship recipient not complete the full Master’s programme on which they have registered, the scholarship will be applied to the relevant tuition fee on a pro-rata basis.
  1. The University reserves the right to vary all or any scholarship awards at its sole discretion.
  1. The University’s decision on all Humanities and Social Sciences Postgraduate Scholarship awards and interpretation of rules and regulations shall be final: appeals will not be considered.
