Human Anatomy & Physiology

Elkhart High School

Mrs. Coppedge

Course Description
Human Anatomy and Physiology is a one-year course designed for college-bound students who desire to develop an understanding and appreciation of the human body. Students will learn the structures, functions, and regulation of human body systems through a variety of strategies. It is recommended for those students wishing to enter any medical field.
Prerequisites
Students should have successfully completed one year of biology, one year of chemistry,
Textbook
The Essentials of human Anatomy and Physiology Marieb
Course Objectives
By the end of the academic year, students should be able to:
· Name and understand the terms that describe relative positions, sections and regions of the human body
· Distinguish types of tissues
· Identify parts of the skeletal, muscular and integumentary systems
· Describe the conduction and transmission of nerve impulses and integration with the special senses
· Associate various hormones with function and glandular origin
· Understand the cells, tissues and organs involved in the immune system
· Identify and describe function of organs in the digestive, cardio/pulmonary and urinary systems
· Compare/contrast male and female reproductive organs
· Compare/contrast human anatomy with cat anatomy
Grading
Student progress and understanding will be measured using a variety of assessments that may include the following:
· Class work and homework
Diagrams / Labeling
Study Guide Packets
Worksheets
· Participation
· Projects and activities
· Lab exercises, dissections and reports
· Chapter tests and quizzes
· Cumulative final exam each semester

→ If absent on the day a project/major grade is due – must have someone bring it that day or turn it in early

Labs
Students must take the safety test before they will be allowed to work in the lab. Students will

follow directions and strict safety procedures at all times or they will be excused from lab work with no

score. Attendance during all lab days is extremely important as some lab work can be difficult to make up.

An alternative assignment may be required if a lab is missed.

This course is an elective science course and dissection plays an important role in the study and understanding of Human Anatomy and Physiology. Therefore, dissections are required; no alternative assignments will be arranged. I cannot stress enough that you will be required to participate in the dissection of the cat and other animals. You cannot simply stand back and watch or you will not know the material for the lab practical tests. Dissections to be included in this course may include: brain, heart, kidney, frog, and cat.

During the Reproductive System, the Miracle of Life will be shown in class.
