Who can apply:
Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Clinical Psychologists and Registered Nurses who work in the speciality area of Pain services in the Republic of Ireland.

Kevin Vowles(Consultant Clinical Psychologist). Gail Sowden(consultant Physiotherapist)Interdisciplinary Musculoskeletal Pain Assessment & Community Treatment Service in The Haywood Hospital, UK. Julie Ashworth, (Consultant in Pain Medicine), will attend on Saturday 16th June 2012.
Learning Objectives
The aim of the workshops is for participants to improve their knowledge of;
- Pain Terminology
- Models of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy & the Biopsychosocial Approach
- Clinical Interviewing (emphasizing multidimensional aspects of pain & CBT)
- Assessment tools, pain rating scalesand outcome measures for pain
- The process of selecting clients suitable for intervention/ pain formulations & interdisciplinary liaison
- How to deliver pain management interventions (individual/group/ patient & family education)
- International best practice guidelines/evidence-based practice/emerging therapiesrelevant to pain
- Team work and group process
- Awareness of Ethical Issues in multidisciplinary pain management & research
Prerequisites for the workshop
A standard of knowledge and expertise in the management of pain is expected in participants applying to attend the workshop. Participants should have basic knowledge and experience in the areas outlined below before attending this training;
- Understand the current theories of the anatomical, physiological, and psychological basis of pain and pain relief and conceptualise pain from a bio- psychosocial model.
- Understand pain physiology and be able to recognise the differences between acute and chronic pain and their implications for assessment and management of pain. Be able to define pain as a multidimensional experience.
- Be aware of the epidemiology of pain as a health concern.
- Be familiar with the roles and responsibilities of other health care professionals in the area of pain management and the merits of interdisciplinary collaboration.
- Be familiar with the reliability, validity, benefits, and limitations of self-report, behavioural, physiological and psychological measures to assess and measure pain, pain experience, and impact of pain on everyday life.
- Be able to assess the pain experience and resulting therapeutic needs for an individual according to a nursing, occupational therapy, physiotherapy or psychology framework.
- Use a person-centred perspective to formulate collaborative intervention strategies consistent with a nursing, occupational therapy, physiotherapy or psychology perspective.
- Understand the prevention of pain problems in the home and workplace within a framework of health promotion and illness prevention.
- Recognise how age, gender, family, culture, spirituality, and the environment contribute to the pain experience and must be considered in assessment and management of pain
- Adopt a critical appraisal perspective toward the use of assessment and intervention strategies and outcome measures and be able to describe current best practice in chronic pain management.
