“HEALTH IN MOTION (HiM) COMPETITION 2007”

Introduction

Welcome to School of Health Sciences’ “Health in Motion” (HiM) Competition at Ngee Ann Polytechnic.

In recent years, Singapore has seen a growing number of citizens with obesity, especially among the younger population, as a result of unhealthy diet and affluent lifestyle. The School of Health Sciences is keen to promote healthy lifestyle among secondary school students. Hence, we are organizing a “Health in Motion” Competition for these students.

Our objective is to challenge students to design creative activities that will help them or their friends to adopt a healthy lifestyle, with the ultimate aim to achieve better physical and mental health.These activities will be captured on video and submitted for the competition.

It is our desire that these students, having participated in the competition, may become catalysts for promoting healthy living in their respective schools. The competition will stimulate students to think creatively by sourcing and integrating information from various sources in developing their own plans. Implementation of their plan will give them a sense of ownership and empowerment in attaining a healthy living.

The “Health in Motion”(in short, HiM) Programme

The competition will consist of the following four sessions:

1)Health talks - In this session, we will invite several healthcare professionalsto provide information on nutrition, fitness and exercise. As well, information pertaining to basic video filming will be provided. In addition, participants will be briefed on the competition requirements and judging criteria.

2)Drafting of Plan - Participants will conceptualise their exercise and diet plan and submit it on line.

3)Implementation and video-recording – Once their plan has been acknowledged, participants will carry out their plan over a period of two months. The process of implementation will be captured in a video format.The video clip will also include how their plan has impacted the team in terms of their fitness and health. Methods used to motivate the team members during the implementation should be included as well.

4)Submission of Plan

Participants will submit their plans and reports on-linein powerpoint formatand to post thevideo clip on You-tube.

5)Finals of Competition – Teams will be judged according to the creativity of the video presentation and of their plan, implementation of sustainability of their plans.

Judging Criteria

Marks will be allocated to the following:

1. / Content of the plan
a)Exercise and fitness;
b)Diet / 20%

2. / Motivational methods employed / 10%
3. / Implementation and applicability / 10%
4. / Video presentation:
-Creativity, clarity and organisation / 40%

Eligibility

The competition is open to all secondary school students enrolled in 2007.

Competition Rules

  1. Each team will have 4 to 6 members. Each team can select all or some of the members as subjects to implement their fitness plan.
  2. The video presentation should not exceed 8 minutes.
  3. Materials and content submitted previously for the “Fit In…Fat Out Competition”held in January/February 2006 are not allowed to be used for this competition.

Competition Programme

Session 1 – Health Talks (21Mar 07, 2:30 – 5:30)

Experts in the fields of nutrition, fitness, mental health will be providing useful information on these areas.

Tentative topics for this session are:

  • Diet and healthy living
  • Exercise and fitness
  • The ABCs of video-filming
  • Students’ sharing of their success of healthy living

At the end of the session, students will be briefed on the competition details and the procedure in entering the competition.Participants will submit the competition registration form.

Session 2 – Conceptualisation and Drafting of Plan (13 Apr 07)

Participants will meet and design their healthy lifestyle plan, taking into consideration all the judging criteria. After the plan has been drafted, they will then submit their plans on-line in a prescribed form.

Session 3 – Implementation and video-recording (Apr 07 – Jun 07)

After the plan has been acknowledged by the organizer, participants will carry out their plan and record the progress. Participants will capture the various stages on video. Total video filming should not exceed 8 minutes. The video presentation should be in Mpeg 1 (VCD) or WAV format.

Session 4 – Submission of Report and Video Clip (29 Jun 07)

Teams will submit their plans on:

A)Powerpoint presentation – including the descriptions of the plan, the progress made by team members and approaches used to motivate them to carry out the plan in not more than 8 slides; all of these will be in powerpoint format and to be submitted on-line to Ngee Ann Polytechnic at the following website:

B)Short video clip (should not exceed8 minutes) labelled “Health-in-Motion Competition (HiM)”and the team’s name to be posted in You-tube.

Session 5 – Finals of Competition (13July 07)

Selected teams will be notified to do a video presentation of their plan at the Finals of the Competition, at which six best teams will be awarded prizes.

Finalists will have to present the entire process of the plan, from introduction, implementation and the progress made by members in following their health plan in video.
