Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a 3 year; part-time (80%) fixed term position as a Postdoctoral Researcher - SWAT Trials (Studies Within a Trial) with the School of Nursing and Midwifery at the National University of Ireland, Galway.

This position is funded by Health Research Board and is available for a three year contract period from 1st July 2015.

Information on the Irish Primary Care Trials Network

Primary care accounts for 90% of all patient health care contacts, with more than twenty million annual individual consultations in Ireland alone. The HRB report Irish Primary Care R&D (Mant, 2006) noted ‘the need for a firm evidence base is as great in primary as in hospital care... and must in part be obtained by R&D in primary care’.

The aim of the new € 2.5 million Irish Primary Care Trials Network, funded by the Health Research Board, is to establish a creative and sustainable environment for high quality primary care trials that improve individual patient health and healthcare.

Network activities will deliver i) access and support to those interested in conducting trials in Irish primary care, including industry ii) multidisciplinary trial education, mainly through existing resources, for all those interested in primary care trials. Trial activities include two exemplar definitive interventions and in collaboration with the HRB Trial Methodology Research Network (https://www.hrb-tmrn.ie/), trial methodology research investigating practitioner and patient recruitment (see https://www.hrb-tmrn.ie/recruitment-in-primary-care/).

Job Description:

The successful candidate will, with the SWAT PI, be responsible for developing and testing the interventions within the SWAT trials, and will work closely with researchers in a trial of urinary tract infection management in general practice (SATIN). A key part of the role will be to plan, execute, and finalise the SWAT trials according to strict deadlines. The successful candidate will also support dissemination of the intervention materials, working especially with the MRC-START team in the UK. He/she will need excellent knowledge of clincial research, research skills, project management and will need to be able to engage successfully with clinical colleagues. The School has an active programme of research in randomised trials and systematic reviews and meta analyses and experience in these areas is highly desirable. The School of Nursing and Midwifery and the Department of General Practice has an active programme of research in randomised trials and systematic reviews and meta analyses and experience in these areas is highly desirable.

Requirements:

Essential

·  A PhD or PhD in prospect, or equivalent research experience across complex clinical research projects;

·  Health Services Research/Population Health Research experience and preferably experience in recruiting patients and GPs;

·  Capable of working independently and autonomously;

·  Substantial experience in research including research budget development and subsequent management;

·  Excellent communication and organizational skills

·  Highly motivated and passionate about developing high quality clinical research;

·  Peer review publications;

·  Preference will be given to candidates with experience in randomised trials;

·  Self-motivated with strong attention to detail and quality;

·  History of successful project management of complex research projects;

·  Excellent IT skills;

·  Flexibility in meeting project requirements and in working across a multidisciplinary team;

·  Excellent written and oral communication skills to include substantial experience in report writing;

·  Excellent interpersonal skills.

Salary: €37,750 - €41,181 (80% pro-rata) per annum (public sector pay policy rules pertaining to new entrants will apply)

Start date: Position is available from 1st July 2015.
