SEMESTER: 7th Grade 2014-2015

GENERAL COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is the final course in the three year middle school sequence. Upon completion of this course, students will have completed the equivalent of Algebra 1. Successful completion of this course is a prerequisite for any of the math sequences offered at the High School level.

COURSE OBJECTIVE:

Students will acquire and demonstrate knowledge of the concepts, definitions and properties constituting the Common Core Georgia Performance Standards Curriculum. Students will develop critical thinking and decision making skills by connecting concepts to practical applications needed to be productive members of society.

COURSE SEQUENCE AND PACING:

This course will be divided into four 9-week grading periods. The topics and standards covered are as follows:

Semester 1:

Unit 1 - Inferences

Students will use random sampling to draw inferences about a population. Students will also draw informal comparative inferences about two populations.

Unit 2 - Geometry

Students will draw, construct and describe geometrical figures and describe the relationships between them. They will solve real-life and mathematical problems involving angle measure, area, surface area, and volume.

Unit 3 - Probability

Students will investigate chance processes and develop, use, and evaluate probability models.

Unit 4 - Transformations, Congruence and Similarity

Students will understand congruence and similarity using physical models, transparencies, or geometry software.

Unit 5 - Exponents

Students will work with radicals and integer exponents.

Semester 2:

Unit 6 – Geometric Applications of Exponents

Students will understand and apply the Pythagorean Theorem.

Unit 7 – Functions

Students will define, evaluate and compare functions.

Unit 8 – Linear Functions

Students will understand the connections between proportional relationships, lines and linear equations.

Unit 9 – Linear Models and Tables

Students will use functions to model relationships between quantities.

Unit 10 – Solving Systems of Equations

Students will analyze and solve linear equations and pairs of simultaneous linear equations.

GRADING POLICY: Grades are cumulative through the end of each semester and will be based only on demonstrated mastery of concepts and development of skills, not effort or potential. Updated grade reports will be posted on Parent Portal on a weekly basis so students and parents may continually monitor academic progress. Grade reports will go out every four and one half weeks. The BibbCountySchool District grading policy is Assessments 50%, Classwork 40%, and Homework 10%.

DAILY AGENDA REQUIREMENT: Students are required to bring their agenda to all classes daily. As students enter the classroom, the daily routine is to immediately write down their homework into their agenda. Each night we ask that parents review and initial the agenda. This is a way to ensure open communication between home and school.

HOMEWORK: Homework will be assigned. No credit will be given for problems that do not show all formulas, calculations and steps to determine the answer. Assignments will be posted in the classroom daily. After an absence, students are expected to copy the missed homework assignment and missed classwork into their agenda to complete.Students are responsible for getting, completing, and turning in all make-up work within 5 days of the absence. Work that is late or incomplete will not receive credit after five days of the due date.

MATH – STUDENT SUPPLIES: Students will need the following supplies by Monday, August 4th: 3 inch binder that will be used for all classes, three dividers (labeled bellwork, classwork, and homework for math only), notebook paper, grid paper, colored pencils, 4 glue sticks, scissors, 1 bottle of Elmer’s glue, hand held pencil sharpener, highlighter, a ream of copy paper, a protractor and compass. Students will use pencils only for all work. Assignments completed in pen are not acceptable in math. Pencils may be sharpened at the beginning of class. Please bring at least 2 pencils with good erasers to class daily.

HEADING PAPERS: All assignments must have student’s name, date, class, and assignment written in the top-right corner of the paper. Neatness counts! Work that is not legible will be marked as incorrect.

CHAPTER TESTS AND 9 WEEKS EXAMS: A comprehensive test to measure students’ mastery of skills and concepts will be given at the end of each unit. Students will be informed of a scheduled test date in advance. The concepts and skills being evaluated will usually be reviewed the day before the test. A variety of test formats may be used. All work must be shown for each problem. Absence before a test date does not excuse a student from taking the test as scheduled.

SEATING ASSIGNMENTS: Each student will have assigned seating.
