How to use the Ofsted mapping document

The green shading in the mapping document shows that there is a possible link between the GLP criterion and the Ofsted wording. If you hover over the red triangle in the corner of the cell along the top row, a description of the Ofsted wording will appear. (The relevant Ofsted paragraphs are printed in full on the separate Word document.) Then if you hover over the red triangle in the corner of the cell in the left-hand column, a description will appear of the possible types of evidence from your school that could be used.

So, for example, the GLP criterion P1: Pupils develop their understanding of global knowledge themes through a range of subjects and topic areas can be seen to link with the following statements from the Ofsted handbook:

Before making the final judgement on the overall effectiveness, inspectors must evaluate: the effectiveness and impact of the provision for pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development .

The cultural development of pupils is shown by their: understanding and appreciation of the wide range of cultural influences that have shaped their own heritage and that of others.

The cultural development of pupils is shown by their: interest in exploring, improving understanding of and showing respect for different faiths and cultural diversity and the extent to which they understand, accept, respect and celebrate diversity, as shown by their tolerance and attitudes towards different religious, ethnic and socio-economic groups in the local, national and global communities.

Inspectors will consider: how well the school supports the formal curriculum with extra-curricular opportunities for pupils to extend their knowledge and understanding and to improve their skills in a range of artistic, creative and sporting activities.

Leadership and Management Outstanding (1)

The broad and balanced curriculum inspires pupils to learn. The range of subjects and courses helps pupils acquire knowledge, understanding and skills in all aspects of their education, including linguistic, mathematical, scientific, technical, human and social, physical and artistic learning.

Teaching, learning and assessment Outstanding (1)

Teachers are quick to challenge stereotypes and the use of derogatory language in lessons and around the school. Resources and teaching strategies reflect and value the diversity of pupils’ experiences and provide pupils with a comprehensive understanding of people and communities beyond their immediate experience. Pupils love the challenge of learning.

Inspectors will make a judgement on the effectiveness of teaching, learning and assessment by evaluating the extent to which: equality of opportunity and recognition of diversity are promoted through teaching and learning.

When undergoing inspection the above could potentially be demonstrated through the following evidence:

Displays, work in books, lesson plans, lesson observations, assemblies, discussion with pupils, curriculum maps, evidence of partnership working.

All the other criteria are mapped in the same way. Some clearly have stronger links with the Ofsted wording than others, depending on their focus.
