How to use RDP (Remote Desktop Connection) procedure to edit documents

Click StartProgramsAccessoriesRemote Desktop Connection

(sometimes it is in the Communication tab)

Enter ex.ibc-pa.org:4901in the dialogue box

ClickOptionsLocal Resourcescheck Printers ClickMoreCheck Drives

Click Connect this will log you ON to the server.

This will log you ON to the server from which you can operate MS Word, or any of the other programs installed there. You will actually be using the resources of the IBC server at our office, not your own computer, when you do this Remote Desktop (RDP) procedure.

After entering ibc-pa\ followed by your username and then entering your password (exactly as you would if you were in the office), you will log IN to the IBC domain. In the center of your desktop, you will see an icon that will take you directly to the place on the server where the BHRS folders are all located. You may be able to skip the “ibc-pa\” part if your computer is recognized by the server.

You will see a folder called BHRS. In that folder is the folder called BSC documents. In that folder is the folder called EVALS (to be edited). This is where you will put your work when you’ve finished with it. Just copy it into that folderusing Windows Explorer. Do not use the MS Word “Save As” command to put it there (that creates a file with NO CONTENT)!

You will also see the folder called Drafts. Inside that folder is a folder with your name on it. That is where you will find work that you need to do when you get an e-mail message alerting you about it. When you finish editing the work in your folder, after you put your initials at the end of the filename, use Windows Explorer to copy (not move) the file into EVALS (to be edited).

IMPORTANT ►If you want to print a file, you can’t just hit “print” -- because you’ll be printing to one of the printers AT OUR OFFICE, not a printer at your home.

To print a file on a printer at your home, you have to copy the file onto the hard disk at your home, and print it from that location, after you’ve closed the RDP connection. This should be really easy, because the “C” drive on you home computer will appear on the list of disk drives in Windows Explorer if you checked “Drives” (see above) before you used RDP to log on to the server.

Click Start ProgramsAccessories

Click Windows Explorer

Click the Folders tab and you’ll see all of the places where you can save files. The “C” drive on your home computer will be at the bottom of the list, not the one near the top (that’s the “C” drive on the computer at the OFFICE that you’re actually using when you use RDP).

If you click on the [+] box to the left of the “C” drive icon in this list, you will see folders that exist in your “C” drive and you can save your work to any of them. Just be sure you erase the document from your home computer after you print it. You do not want to violate HIPAA by leaving it there.
