How to Reduce your Potassium Intake
Potassium is a mineral found in the blood. If your kidneys are not working properly the levels of potassium in your blood may rise too high. This can be dangerous and affect your heart.
To reduce the level of potassium in your blood you may need to cut down on certain foods which are high potassium.
Foods to Choose / Foods to LimitDrinks:
Squash, Fizzy drinks, Tea / Coffee, Pure fruit juices
Fruit:
Apples, Pears, Satsumas, Tinned drained fruit (aim for 2 portions per day) / Oranges, Bananas, Grapes, Dried fruit, Avocado
Vegetables:
Moderate servings of other vegetables –preferably boiled (aim for 2 portions per day)
Boiled potatoes – see over for cooking instructions / Mushrooms, Spinach, Baked beans, Jacket potatoes
Miscellaneous:
Corn snacks e.g. Skips, Wotsits, Dorrito’s, Mints, Boiled sweets, Turkish Delight, Wine gums / Nuts, Crisps, Toffee, Fudge, Liquorice
Milk
Milk intake should be limited to ½ pint per day.
Potatoes
Potatoes are high in potassium and should be prepared in the following way to reduce their potassium content.
- Cut into small pieces.
- Boil in a large volume of water.
- May then be fried, roasted or creamed.
The water used to cook potatoes and vegetables should be discarded.
Suitable Snacks:
Plain, Cream or Jam biscuits
Plain or Flavoured cake (no dried fruit or nuts).
Apple pie, doughnuts, scotch pancakes, teacakes.

How to Increase your Potassium Intake
Potassium is a mineral found in the blood. It is important for how muscles and nerves function, including the heart. If your levels become low it can affect your heart and cause other symptoms such as muscle weakness or cramping.
To increase the level of potassium in your blood you will need to increase foods which are high in potassium
Which foods are high in potassium?
Type of foodPotatoes / Jacket potatoes, chips (including frozen, oven and microwave) and roast potatoes. Potato products e.g. crisps, waffles
Starchy Foods / All Bran, muesli and cereal containing dried fruit and nuts. Cakes and biscuits containing chocolate, nuts or dried fruit
Drinks / Coffee, malted drinks e.g. Ovaltine, Cocoa. Fruit juices, Ribena
Fruit / Avocado, oranges, grapes, dried fruit, bananas
Vegetables / Mushrooms, spinach, baked beans, kidney beans, ackee, bread fruit
Miscellaneous / Chocolate, toffee, fudge, liquorice, nuts, coconut
High potassium snacks:
Nuts
Cakes, biscuits and breakfast cereals containing nuts, dried fruit or chocolate
Chocolate or crisps
