Respondus 4.0 Campus Wide Training
Respondus 4.0 is a powerful application for creating and managing exams that can be printed or published directly to your WorldClass courses.
This tutorial will cover in the detail the process to create exams in Microsoft Word or Notepad. The exams will be uploaded to Respondus and published to your course.
How to get Respondus
- To download Respondus click the following link, or paste to a browser address bar.
- Login to Regis Today, and then click the link Respondus4Campus.
- Save the file, this will likely put the Respondus4Campus.zip file in your Downloads or on your desktop.
- Locate and then extract the zipped file. Now double-click on the Respondus4Campus link to install the file. It is recommended that you accept the default settings for installation of the software.
- During the installation process you will need to provide the following information:
- Institution Name:Regis University
- Local Support Contact:
- Installation Password: ZR621373300-669435036
Preparing exams in Microsoft Word or Notepad
If you use MS Word
1.Turn off automatic numbering in Word.
a.Click File tab.
b.Click Options.
c.Click Proofing.
d.Click AutoCorrectOptions.
e.Click AutoFormat as You Type Tab.
f.Uncheck the box Automatic Numbered and bulleted Lists.
g.Click OK
h.OK
i.Next find the Line and Paragraph setting icon.
j.Set for 0.1. and then choose from the bottom of the menu.
k.Finally, turn off auto spacing at the end of a paragraph.
l.Click OK
If you use Notepad there is no need to turn off any formatting as by default it adds none.
Format a Quiz
- To format Multiple Choice questions, use these guidelines.
- Do not start with a title or directions or any other text. Save the file with the name that will identify it for you.
- Type the question number, followed by a period, followed by space, then the question text.
- Hit Enter or Return once. There should be no blank spaces between question text and answer text.
- Type answers in letters using abc sequence, using lowercase type “a”, followed by period, followed by space, followed by answer text.
- Hit Enter or Return once. There should only be no blank spaces between answer texts.
- Repeat for all possible answers.
- For the correct answer to a question type an * asterisk, followed by letter, followed by period, followed by space and then the answer text.
- To start the next question hit Enter or Return twice and start the next question following the same format.
- There should be on blank space between the last question option and the start of the next question.
Other question types can also be used. These include True and False, Multiple Response, and Matching questions.
2.To format a True False question
- A True False question follows the exact same format as Multiple Choice question, but with these differences.
- Add one blank space after the previous question.
- A TF question will only have two options.
a. True
b. False
- The option True always has to be listed first.
- Spell out “True” and “False”.
- Use an * Asterisk to indicate the correct answer.
3.To format Multiple Response (all that apply) questions
a.Add one blank space after the previous question.
b.Start withType: MR(place a space between the [colon (:)] and the M) before you type the question text.
c.Format the question and answer options the same as for Multiple Choice.
d.Add an asterisk before all correct answer options.
e.Skip one line and start the next question.
f.Repeat for all Multiple Response questions in the quiz.
4.To format Matching questions
a.Add one blank space after the previous question.
b.Start with Type: MT. (place a space between the [colon (:)] and the M)
c.Add the question number followed by a period, a space, and the text of the question which should be directions like “Match the College with the Program”.
d.For the answer optionstype a criteria equivalent to a question, add a space, the = symbol, a space, and the correct matching criteria.
- Feedback - For self-assessments, you may wish to set up question or answer feedback.
- Feedback for individual answer choices can be imported by placing the feedback immediately after the answer choice by beginning the line with the @ symbol. There must be at least one space between the @ symbol and the feedback text.

3) Who determined the exact speed of light?
a. Albert Einstein
@ No. Albert Michelson determined the exact speed of light.
*b) Albert Michelson
@ Yes. Albert Michelson won the Nobel Prize for Physics for determining the exact speed of light.
c) Thomas Edison
@ No, Thomas Edison did not determine the exact speed of light.
d. Guglielmo Marconi
@ No. Marconi did not discover the exact speed of light, but he did win the Nobel Prize for Physics for his work with radio waves.
- General feedback, which provides feedback for an overall question (opposed to feedback for individual answers), must appear immediately after the question wording and before any of the answer choices. The line must also begin with the @ symbol, and there must be at least one space between the @ symbol and the feedback text.
For Example: Title: Speed of Light
3) Who determined the exact speed of light?

- Saving your file
Using Notepad.
- Click File >Save As.
- By default Notepad saves as “Plain Text” (.txt) which works fine with Respondus.
- Give your file a name like the quiz number and course or what the quiz is about.
- Select where you want to save the file.
- Click Save.
Using MS Word
- Click FileSave As.
- Save as Type: Select Plain Text (*.txt).
- Give your file a name like the quiz number and course or what the quiz is about.
- Select where you want to save the file.
- Click Ok.
The next part of this tutorial focuses on work done inside of Respondus environment.
Importing to Respondus
- Launch Repondus 4.0 Campus Wide.
- Click Import Questions.
- A 3. dialog box opens with several options.
- Type of file – Select Plain text (.txt) or Microsoft Word.
- Browse to the file to upload.
- Create a new document, named: - Provide a name (Final Exam).
- Click Preview and verify any errors in Preview Results.
- Warnings and Notes that indicate no correct answers or multiple answers for a questionneed to be fixed. The notes will tell you which question(s) contain an error. You can correct the errors in your file and re-import or correct the questions once published to D2L.
- Warnings and Notes that indicate duplicate question title has been changed can be ignored.
- Click Finish.
Publishing to your course
4.Click Preview and Publishtab.
5.Click Publish.
6.Click Publish Wizard.
7.Select Publish to single course.
8.Select add new server. The D2L server needs to be setup once.
9.Select Yes, check for preconfigured server settings/Click Next.
10.Server Settings
- Enter “Regis WorldClass” as a name to describe the sever.
- Enter your RegisNET credentials.
- Check the box to Save my User Name and Password.
- Click Next.
11.After the connection test is done click Next/Click Finish.
12.You will be taken back to the publish wizard screen. Click Next. This will establish a connection from Respondus to D2L. This may take a few minutes.
13.Select your course you wish to publish too.
- Ensure Create new quiz is selected under Quiz.
- Uncheck Apply Random Sectionsif your exam is not random.
- Click Next.
14.Wait for the publish process to complete. Click Finish.
Sharing your Respondus file with other faculty
- Respondus automatically saves Files to C:\Respondus Projects\.
- This Respondus file can be sent to other faculty to load into their courses.
- To send the Respondus Compose a new email.
a. Click Attach File.
- Browse to C:\Respondus Projects\.
- Locate the folder for your quiz and open it.
- Select the rsp file to send.
- To open a Respondus file that has been sent to you.
- Save the Respondus file to a location on your computer.
- Open Respondus.
- Click Open.
- Click Browse and locate the file on your computer/ Click Open.
- The file will open and automatically save to your Respondus Projects folder.
Retrieving Tests from D2L
Existing exams in D2L can be retrieved with Respondus and sent to other faculty to load into their courses.
- ClickRetrieval Tab.
- Click Retrieve Questions.
- The server you created needs to be selected. Click Next.
- This establishes a connection to D2L.
- Choose Course to Retrieve from – Select the course your quiz is in.
- Retrieve Assessment Type – Select Quiz/ Select your quiz.
- Enter a name for the new file (Required) – Name your quiz.
- Click Next
- Your quiz will be imported and saved to Respondus.
