How to set up networking

- at the student villages

*Windows XP *

  1. Insert the network interface card (nic), physically.
  2. Connect the nic to the wall-outlet with a standard network cable
  3. Install drivers
  4. Configure card

Drivers to the nic

Network cable

1. Insert the nic, physically.

  1. Turn off the computer, if it`s not already off.
  2. Unplug the power cord.
  3. Press the power-on-button to empty all current from the system.
  4. Open the case(Use an antistatic chain or at least touch the case before touching any components.)
  5. Locate a free slot;
  6. either a white PCI slot (normally)
  7. or a black ISA slot (on very old systems)
  8. Insert the card by firmly pressing it into the slot. (Do not use force!)
  9. Screw it tight to the case.
  10. Replug the power cord.
  11. Boot the system

2. Connect the nic to the wall-outlet with a standard network cable

  1. Put one end of the cable into the outlet marked “data” and the other into the nic, as shown in the picture below. Whenthe computer is on, you should se a green or orange status light at the back of the case.

3. Install drivers

  1. Boot the computer
  2. Windows will automaticly try to find suitable drivers to the card. If they match, use them, else install the drivers that came with the nic.
  3. Check that the drivers are properly installed in Control Panel->System->Hardware->Device Manager->Network Card; If none of the items are marked with an exclamation markor a regulatory sign and if you can se the network card in the list, then the drivers has been correctly installed.

4. Configure card

  1. Go to Control Panel->Network Connections and right-click the Local Are network connection.
  2. Check that the card listed below the “connect-to-box” is the correct network card.
  3. Check that the four elements as shown in the picture below are present. <bilde av egenskaper for lokal tilkobling>
  4. Mark the Internet-protocol (TCP/IP) and press Properties.
  5. Check Receive IP-adress auotmaticly
  6. Check Receive DNS-server adresse automaticly
  7. You should be online!
