JOURNALS

Directions for Journal Entries: Journal entries are an in-class assignment completed during the first 20 minutes of class. When there is a Journal prompt on the white board, please get your journal at the beginning of class. After you complete your journal entry, please put your journal back in the ELD 1 journal box.

How to Complete your Journal Entry: You will be assigned two different types of entries:

·  Free Response (FR) – the prompt may direct you to write about a personal experience, react to current event, or share your opinion about an event or topic. The heading on your Journal page for a Free Response entry will look like this:

(example) 09-10-17 Journal #1 (FR) – Describe your first day of school this year at Peninsula High School. What was the best part of your day? What was the worst part of your day?

·  Literary Response (LR) – the prompt will direct you to write about or answer a question about the literature we are reading as a class. The heading on your Journal page for a Literary Response entry will look like this:

(example) 10-22-17 Journal #10 (LR) – In the story of “Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox,” what makes the character of Paul Bunyan “larger than life”?

Scoring Guide/Rubric

Grading: Possible Pts per entry = 5pts/Possible Pts per Semester = 50pts

Journals will be scored as follows:

·  10 pts= 1 half page: entry responds to or answers the prompt completely; entry is neat and easy to read.

·  5 pts=1/4 page; entry responds to the prompt completely; entry is neat and easy to read.

·  0 pts= entry is less than ¼ page, or is off-topic, or is illegible (too messy to read!)

KEEP THIS HANDOUT IN THE WRITING SECTION OF YOUR ELD BINDER AND TURN IT IN ON TUESDAY, January 16. It will also be uploaded to Edlio, so if you lose this copy, you will be responsible for printing out a copy, or - 5 pts from your final Journal grade.
