HOW DO I…
CREATE AND EDIT LINKS (SUMMARY LINK WEBPART)
Summary Link Webparts are used to display links on your webpage that can be grouped and styled and can be organised by dragging and dropping.
The image below is a screen capture of a Summary Link Webpart in edit mode. To display edit mode select Site Actions > Edit page from the blue Site Actions tab top right. Only people with contributor permissions and higher can see the Site Actions tab.
1. Add a New Link: To add a new link to your webpart, select the New Link button on the blue navigation bar
A New Link – Webpage Dialog box will appear. (See next image)
- Select Create a link to an item radio box
- Enter a meaningful title for the name of the link
- Provide a description for other users about the content of that link
- Enter the links URL (ie. the destination for the link eg a website, or a document)
Tip: It is best to have the URL copied before you start to create the new link - Tootip - tells other users what is about to happen eg. Link to website, Open document
- Group is the name of the subgroup that the link will belong to. (Create a New Group will be demonstratedin instruction 2 below)
- Styles - select the appropriate style for the link. The Institute standard is bulleted title
- Select OK to have the link appear
- Select Exit Edit Mode (top right) when you have completed adding links.
2 Add a New Group for your Summary Link Part
It is easier for users to interact with your site when links are properly organised. This can be achieved by creating group headings and assigning links to these groups.
Select Site Actions > Edit Page to go into edit mode. Simply click the New Group menu item (see 2 in the first image on the previous page). A small New Group – Webpage Dialog box will appear. Type the name of the group and select OK.
3 Reorder (Links or Groups of links)
Reorder allows you to move links within their group or into another group.
Select Site Actions > Edit Page to go into edit mode. Select the Reorder menu (see 3 in the first image on the previous page). A Reorder Links – Webpage Dialog box appears (see image below).
Select the link or the heading that you want to move, and then click Move Up or Move Down (previous image) to move the item into place.
Tip: While in edit mode you can simply click on a single link or the group header to drag a group to a different order. You cannot drag links or groups of links between different webparts.
