What do students who want to go to law school major in?
The American Bar Association does not recommend any particular major as a "pre-law" major. Accordingly, TCNJ has no designated major for students who want to go to law school. As recommended by the LSAC and ABA, we suggest a strong curriculum combined with a major that you personally find challenging and that is of great interest you. (See ABA-LSAC Official Guide to ABA-Approved Law Schools, 2013 edition, p. 4.)
In recent years, TCNJ students who went to law school completed the following majors in alphabetical order:

How does TCNJ help students who want to go to law school?
The Pre-Law Committee consists of faculty members and administrators particularly interested in the law and in preparing students for law school. Members of the Pre-Law Committee include:
Tao Dumas, Department of Political Science, School of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) –
Nancy Lasher, School of Business –
Robert McGreevey, Department of History, HSS –
Thomas Mahoney, General Counsel for the College –
Kevin Michels, School of Business –
Susanna Monseau, School of Business –
Melinda Roberts, Department of Philosophy, Religion and Classical Studies, HSS –
Morton Winston, Department of Philosophy, Religion and Classical Studies, HSS –
Students select their own pre-law advisor from this list of faculty and are welcome to consult with more than one pre-law advisor as they please and depending on their interests. Pre-law advisors work with students on issues such as course selection, LSAT preparation, the law school admissions process, writing personal statements, deciding where to apply and evaluating offers of admission.
The Pre-Law Listis a means of communicating with students who are interested in going to law school. For inclusion on this list, interested students should contact Melinda Roberts () with their names, email addresses, current (or projected) major and year of graduation.
The Pre-Law Society, a student-run organization, sponsors programs designed to inform pre-law students about subjects of interest.
The Career Centeroversees internships that can be of interest to pre-law students. Any credit received in connection with an internship must be approved by the student’s own department.
The Law and Society Interdisciplinary Concentration enables students to satisfy someof their liberal learning requirements by taking courses related to law. All faculty members of the Pre-Law Committee also serve as advisors for this interdisciplinary concentration. For more information about this program, please seeAppendix A below and
TheLaw, Politics and Philosophy Interdisciplinary Minor helps students prepare for the law school application process and for law school. All faculty members of the Pre-Law Committee also serve as advisors for this minor. For more information about this program, please see Appendix Abelow and
The Moot Court Team gives selected students the opportunity to compete in intercollegiate mock appellate court arguments. For information about this program, please contact Professor Tao Dumas – .
The School of Humanities and Social Sciences(HSS) offers, for incoming first year students who have not yet declared a major, an “open options” track specifically designated “prelaw.” Interest in this option is indicated by students at the time of their application to the College. It is important to note that students who have already declared a major or who are in the regular open options track are in no way disadvantaged in respect of their interest in attending a top tiered law school.
