Foundation Embroidery

How is the course organised?

This is a 1-year course leading to a City & Guilds Level 2 Design & Craft qualification: 7716-L2-39 Embroidery.

You will study:

Design: -Design gives you the building blocks to be able to put ideas down and create original pieces in your craft area. It gives you a basic understanding of how to use colour, line, shape, form and texture. Although the experiments and exploration are done in paper, it is fully linked to your craft area.

Embroidery – In the Foundation Course we study both Hand and Machine embroidery.

  • We will explore hand stitching developing texture and line stitches.
  • We will explore the sewing machine; introducing free machine embroidery.
  • We will explore the use of fabrics in appliqué techniques.
  • We will explore the use of wadding, stuffing and stitch in raised and padded techniques.
  • We will explore fabrics, threads and fibres in bonding and layering techniques.

Ten worked samples will be made for your samples folio.

You will also cover dyeing and colouration techniques to create backgrounds and materials for use in embroidery.

Making – There are 2 making projects in the Foundation Course
  1. Using traditional hand stitch techniques.
  2. Using innovative hand and machine stitch techniques.

The above course is delivered through 3 themed projects: Sunsets, The Weather and Nature’s Chaos.

Course Delivery

This course is an attended course at The ArtyBird Centre in Carnforth.

  • You start in September and one weekend a month for eleven months.
  • You would be expected to put in around a day a week of study to complete the course.
  • You are responsible for providing materials and equipment for the craft aspect of your course. There is a studio fee of £30 that gives you access to a wide range of art material, tools and dyes. Many of these items are available for sale for you to continue working at home. We also stock sketchbooks and fabrics at competitive prices.
  • The cost for the course will be £750 + £30 Studio Fee, per year, plus £90 City & Guilds registration and administration fees. Students can pay by 10x£80 monthly installments plus Studio Fee £30 and the registration fee of £90 up front. Fees are reviewed every year.

Meet your Tutors

Kate Horner is a practicing artist with a B.Sc. (Hons) Textile Design (Woven Structures) and a M.A. in Design Studies (Textiles). Kate has taught in Secondary School and Further Education for many years and is a thoughtful educationalist. This has been recognized by City & Guilds who have awarded her a Medal For Excellence. Her artwork explores many forms of textiles, centred on felt making and stitch. Her sketchbooks are vital to the work she makes and these are extended and explored through the computer. Her themes are about herself and her relationship with people and places. This focuses on her family and friends, and their environmental and peace work. She has exhibited nationally and internationally.

Angie Burt is an accomplished embroiderer. She is passionate about traditional techniques and excited by modern developments. Her background is Fashion and she used to own her own Boutique. Now she lives and breathes embroidery, studying for her Advanced Diploma. She enjoys designing her work and is studying Creative Computing to develop these skills. She is inspired by nature and the patterns created on animals and plants. Angie is becoming a popular tutor in our area and we are delighted to have her join our team.
