How are facts different from opinions? Class Notes

1. A fact is a statement you can prove is true or false. Scientists can conduct an experiment or do research to learn if a scientific fact is true.

Example:

·  Thomas Holtzman School has 30 homerooms. (Conduct an experiment)

·  The tilt of Earth’s axis is the reason we have the 4 seasons. (Do research)

2. An opinion is what someone feels, thinks or believes. Scientists cannot test an opinion to learn if it is true.

Example: Thomas Holtzman has the best breakfasts and lunches.

Opinion words to watch for: always, best, most, many, a lot, usually, and any word ending with “-est.”

A testable question is one that can be answered by designing and conducting an experiment. To answer these questions, most scientists carry out investigations using The Scientific Method.
