ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT COORDINATOR

The Economic Development Coordinator performs administrative work in economic development planning and delivery of services for small business development. The Coordinator is a part of the Community Planning and Development (CPD) team and reports to the Assistant CPD Director.

JOB REQUIREMENTS: Requires a bachelor’s degree from a recognized college or university in business administration, finance, economics or closely related field, and a minimum of five years’ experience in small business development, economic development, economic development administration, loan origination and underwriting and business loan program administration; or a combination of education and experience equivalent to these requirements.

This position requires a unique combination of strategic planning and small business organization expertise, excellent management skills, program management and business motivational skills, and communication to internal and external clients in a professional manner. Must have comprehensive knowledge of the principles, practices and methods of compiling, analyzing and evaluating economic and market research data; thorough knowledge of small business assistance programs; ability to organize and operate a local development corporation and a Small Business Administration Loan Program; ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with business leaders, business associations, government officials, employees and the general public. Must possess a valid driver’s license.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES (including but not limited to): Provides overall technical assistance to small businesses and would-be entrepreneurs on business expansion and start-up ventures; helps entrepreneurs write business plans and counsels them during start-up phase of their companies; markets the City’s business development loan program; seeks funding to capitalize and sustain small business development; administers business incubator; originates loans and performs underwriting process; coordinates the loan application process and the activities of the Loan Committee; maintains financial operational reportand accounting data; coordinates invoices and collects payments from Micro Business Loan recipients; proposes budgets; recommends policies to improve program operations; provides business counseling services, including assisting in the development of needs analysis, market research, financial management, inventory of small, women and minority-owned businesses; conducts small business workshops as needed; represents the City at community, business and professional meetings; builds partnerships with financial and social capital institutions, external funding sources, local business groups and educational institutions; performs related work as required.
