Housing Provisions in Ireland

Different people have different housing requirements depending on their needs.

Families

The needs of a family are very dependant on the ages and size of the family

-  As with all houses they should be well ventilated, well lit with plenty of space

-  Sufficient bedrooms for all members

-  Adequate storage for clothing and toys/equipment

-  Younger families will need a play area/enclosed garden. Older families will require a study area

-  If the family is very large then extra bathrooms will be required especially with teenagers

-  Living area for relaxing and family time

-  For a family with a young family a large hot press is required

-  Close to amenities, work, school and public transport.

Single People

-  Smaller space required

-  Small town houses or apartments. They normally rent first and when they purchase they take lodgers in. House sharing is also popular.

-  Proximity to work or college is a priority.

Elderly

-  Housing must meet the basic needs, however alterations may be required if the person has special needs.

-  Single storey compact accommodation

-  If stairs in the house a chair lift may be needed

-  Bathrooms may be fitted with handrails, non-slip flooring, raised toilet seats and shower seats

-  Good, safe and efficient method of heating

-  Good lighting to avoid accidents

-  Proximity to shops, church and post office.

-  Telephone, security or alarm-communication system.

-  Door-chains and peep holes for security

-  Sheltered accommodation may suit some elderly – ‘living monitored by care worker or supervisor’. Others may need to stay in a nursing home or Community hospital.

People with disabilities

-  Adjustments must be made to the basic housing requirements to cater for disabilities

-  Some adjustments which may be required are:

o  Ramps

o  Wider doorways

o  Lower kitchen units

o  Appropriately positioned switches and door handles

o  Rails in bathrooms and raised toiled seats

o  Alarm bells

o  Doorbells with flashing lights for people with hearing difficulties

o  Alarm communication system

Homeless

-  Homeless people require the very basic needs first and foremost.

-  Accommodation should be regular and not on a first come first serve system.

-  Demand outdoes supply.

-  It is the local authorities working with voluntary organisation that try to provide this accommodation.

-  This accommodation should be private, secure and make the person feel safe.

-  Communal facilties reduce the feeling of isolation
