House Information Thatchdown Cottage

Dear guests,

Many thanks for renting our property for your holiday. We loved our cottage at first sight when we bought it in 2014 and we are very proud of its final look after two years of hard work to bring it back to its former cosiness.

We want you to have a lovely time at Thatchdown. Please keep in mind that this is our home as well so as you might expect we have a few house rules to keep things ship-shape.

House and Garden

Please leave your shoes either at the front door or back door and wear the provided slippers in the house. The kitchen and back door areas have underfloor heating and the rest of the house has a lot of fluffy carpets so you should feel warm and comfortable.

The underfloor heating automatically adjusts to the environment so please do not change the settings. In the summer the heating is switched off, but if you are too cold please feel free to light a fire in the fireplace or log heater, or adjust the electrical heaters (just remember to turn everything off before you leave).

We want you to feel at home, so please feel free to use the items in the gift basket, they are free of charge and also use any toiletries if you like them.

The kitchen is fully equipped with all standard utensils and appliances but let us know if anything is missing and we will try to include it for your next visit.

There are some areas around the house which are still under construction and can only be entered at your own risk. The garage will eventually be converted into an extra party/bar room but is a construction site at the moment. Also the top level of the garden and the stone path leading to it, are not suitable when you are not on secure footing. Please be careful especially when it is wet outside.

Toilets

All toilet waste in the village is treated in a maceration process which means toilets can strictly only take natural waste or toilet paper. No tampons, diapers, pads or wet toilet paper (even if it says ‘flushable’) can be used. Please obey this strictly as the Council confirms they can trace any ‘foreign’ items back to the house they came from and we would have to pass the repair bill on to you.

Fireplaces

Both chimneys are fully restored and lined and can be used to make a fire. However please stick to logs, kindle or slow burning bricks. Do NOT use paper to speed up the fire, or burn any household waste. The danger is that in case it has not burnt completely by the time it comes out of the chimney the still burning material could land on the thatched roof and so set the house on fire. If you have any questions, please ask.

Small breakages

Don’t worry if you have any small damages or breakages of glass or plates. You can either replace them with anything close to the broken item or if you prefer you can estimate the value and put the amount in the little ‘savings’ box on the cupboard by the log fire in the dining room.

TV and Broadband

You have a Skybox at your disposal as well as a DVD/CD player and broadband. The TV can be operated with the Sky remote which switches everything on automatically (TV and Surround Sound).

Books:

There are a number of books on the windowsill and upstairs in the master bedroom for you to enjoy. We know how it is when your holiday is about to be finished but the book is now, in this case feel free to take the book home with you; just replace it with another one you might have read already or leave £2 in the money box and we will replenish them once in a while. There is also a little second-hand library in the telephone box outside St Mary’s Church.

Pets

Your pets are more than welcome but please make sure to wipe their paws when it is muddy outside. We have two dog beds upstairs which you can place wherever suits you best; we also have a puppy cage which is big enough for other small animals. In case you bring rabbits or guinea pigs, please ensure that they do not sharpen their teeth on the carpet, cables or walls.

Please ensure that all dogs’ fouling are removed from the garden prior to your departure. Please also pick up any poo on your walks around the area. There are dog ‘toilets’ behind Barrington Court by the workshops and on the cricket pitch at the entrance to Barrington Court.
