Background

Scarborough, Whitby and Ryedale Mind (SWR Mind) is responsible for the provision of high quality services for people with mental health problems in Scarborough, Whitby, Ryedale and the Esk Valley. In delivering this service we feel passionately about the engagement, contribution and impact of our SWR Mind Volunteers on our service users and the overall success of the SWR Mind.

As an integral part of our team, the Volunteer Coordinator will be responsible for:

  • Marketing and advertising volunteering opportunities
  • Driving volunteer recruitment
  • Delivering training to potential and existing volunteers
  • Participating in the development of the training programme
  • Working alongside the staff team to develop a wider range of volunteering roles
  • Monitoring volunteer outcomes
  • Supporting/delivering additional training and support opportunities internally and externally.

This post is subject to an enhanced DBS check. A driving license and access to a vehicle is essential

Purpose of role

  • To deliver multi-media, dynamic, high quality training to volunteers, in preparation for their supporting people with mental health problems in the community in accordance with SWR Mind’s values, ethos and recovery focused approach
  • To share responsibility in developing and implementing volunteer recruitment strategy. Assisting the Side by Side team in organising, marketing and delivering recruitment events
  • To manage, monitor and supervise the volunteer team
  • To manage a programme of support activities, group supervision, further training and social activities for the volunteer team
  • To continuously review and improve the organisation’s approach to recruiting, supporting and training volunteers, working towards Investors in Volunteers.

Main duties

  • Managing and administrating the volunteer journey from initial enquiries to closure
  • Recruitment and selection
  • Preparing for and delivering training sessionsusing a variety of methods and meeting a range of learning styles
  • Producing post training evaluation reports
  • To develop basic volunteer training in response to evaluations, best practice, changing legislation, new research and guidelines
  • To develop new training modules for volunteers and partner organisations
  • To create and maintain learning materials to high standard of accessibility to support the ongoing development of volunteers e.g. hand-outs, multimedia presentations
  • Liaising with local media to promote volunteering
  • Promoting volunteer opportunities via face to face events, talks and tasters, SWR Mind website, newsletter and social media outlets
  • Liaising with project support workers regarding trainee volunteer skills, interests, issues and performance at training events
  • Support and supervise the volunteer team
  • Building partnerships with local businesses, third sector and statutory organisations in order to promote volunteering with SWR Mind as widely as possible
  • Attending relevant forums or networks to keep up to date on the volunteering landscape in the region and promote good practice
  • Adhering to SWR Mind appropriate policies and procedures, e.g. complying with administration procedures relating to volunteer applications, training and qualification

Person specification:

Essential / Desirable
Knowledge / General overview of mental health problems and their effects
Sound knowledge of the practicalities of volunteer management
Full, clean driving license and access to a vehicle / Sound knowledge of mental health services in Scarborough and how they work
Understanding of the principles of
person centred support and recovery for people with mental health problems
Knowledge of the impact of stigma and discrimination and their impact on the lives of people with mental health problems
