Café Assistant

Accountable to:Café Assistant Manager

Hours:0-20 hours per week during term time (including some evenings)

Location:Blueprint Café – High Holborn

JOB PURPOSE

  • The role is to work as a Café Assistant at the Blueprint Café based in High Holborn
  • The Café Assistant will be able to multi-task and perform high standards of customer service, while ensuring the Café is kept running smoothly
  • The Barista will also positively represent the Students’ Union and its activities and ethics.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • To act in manager’s absence, in charge of the Cafe.
  • To work in a team.
  • Ensure compliance with all financial procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with H&S and FS regulations.
  • Show the knowledge of Café’s specifics, especially menus.
  • Using their excellent communication skills to provide information on the food and drink available at the Cafes.
  • Serve customers in a polite and friendly manner.
  • Ensure the Cafes are kept in clean and tidy state during opening hours.
  • Ensure the Cafes are closed correctly at the end of the shifts.
  • To keep a sound basic knowledge of other services offered by the Students’ Union.
  • Use initiative to solve any problems that customers may have or find the relevant person who can solve the problem

  • Contribute to the positive and professional image of the Union and not act in such a manner as to bring the Union into disrepute.
  • To observe and uphold the requirements of the Union Constitution and act at all times in accordance with policies including equality of opportunity.
  • Undertake any other duties appropriate for the grade and responsibilities of the post that may from time to time be reasonably requested.
  • Where you are required to work with volunteers you must support and manage them appropriately in line with the Students’ Union volunteer policy.
  • Environmental consideration and environmental best practice is the responsibility of all Students’ Union staff
  • Any other tasks that would be deemed suitable within this role as directed by line manager.

The ideal candidates will…

  • Have previous barista experience, but this is desirable, as we are here to help developing people so we can give you training if you don’t.
  • Experience working in a Café/Catering environment
  • Experience representing an organisation and leaving a positive impression
  • Ability to use own initiative
  • Desire to work in a student environment within democratic structures
  • Trustworthy, reliable, and flexible with good attention to detail and demonstrable integrity
  • Approachable nature
  • Capable of understanding and following Financial procedures
  • Pro- active approach to work
  • Empathy with the aims and values of University of Arts Students’ Union
