Motel Safety and Security

Richard Stockton College Police Department

CRIME PREVENTION TIPS:

·  Determine the most direct route to and from your room, to the fire escapes, elevators, and nearest phone.

·  If parking at night, park in a well lit area, know the most direct route to the motel entrance, and promptly walk towards that location. If any suspicious persons are observed in the area, do not park your vehicle. Pull up directly in front of the motel entrance, advise the motel manager, and ask him/her to watch you safely park your vehicle.

·  Don’t forget to lock your car and do not leave valuables in plain sight inside the vehicle.

·  Travel with a friend whenever possible.

·  If you have a cell phone, have it programmed to call Galloway Police at 652-3705 or 9-1-1 in an emergency.

·  If you are on the first floor, make sure your window is locked and the curtains closed.

·  When occupying or leaving your room, use all auxiliary locking devices on doors and windows.

·  Use the door viewer (peep hole) to identify anyone requesting entry.

·  Open the door only if you know the person. If in doubt, call the motel office.

·  Unpack and place belongings in the closet dresser. Arrange your things so you will know if anything is missing. Consider securing any valuable items in a piece of secured luggage if available.

·  If you have luggage, keep it locked so it can not be used to carry out items that may be stolen from you

·  Never leave money, checks, credit cards or car keys in the room. Take them with you.

·  Do not leave any valuables in your room when you leave. If you have expensive jewelry or other valuables secure them in the motel safe if available or consider leaving them home.

·  Report any lost or stolen items to the motel management and to the Galloway Township Police at 652-3705.

·  Report to the police and management any suspicious movements in the corridors, rooms, or parking lot.

·  Do not forget, you are not on the Stockton Campus. You are in a public area and may encounter different people. So be aware!

·  Never give your room number or phone number to a stranger.

·  If you are alone and the elevator is occupied by someone you are not comfortable with, do not get into it. Wait for the next one. Familiarize yourself with the emergency procedures if you get stuck in the elevator.

·  Remember—the only way to stop crime is to get involved in Crime Prevention.

·  Stockton College Police are here to assist in any possible way so please do not hesitate to call us at 652-4390.

FIRE SAFETY:

·  Read any fire safety or escape information posted in your room or public areas. Read the fire evacuation plan carefully. If one is not posted in your room, request one from the front desk.

·  Never smoke in bed

·  Locate the two exits from your room (window and door).

·  Have a working flashlight available in your room. Stockton Police and Housing have flashlights available if you do not have one.

·  Make sure the smoke alarm is working.

·  Find the two exits outside your room. Locate the exit stairwell and where it leads. Remember if it is to the right or left, on the right or left side of the hall, and count the number of doors you will pass to reach it. You may be crawling along and feeling for the exit in the smoke.

·  Report to management any exits that are locked, propped open or blocked.

·  Find out if the windows open and how. Look to see what lies below. If you are on the upper floor, there may be a roof or deck within safe dropping distance.

·  Practice finding and unlocking your room door in the dark.

·  Count the number of doors between your room and the exits. This will assist you in the need of an emergency evacuation.

·  Find the fire alarm on your floor.

·  If your room door is hot, do not open it. Instead, seal the door with wet towels or sheets. Turn off the fans and air conditioners. Call the fire department, 9-1-1, to give your location. Signal from your window.

·  Choose a safe meeting place outside the building for your group to meet.

·  Have An Escape Plan!!!!!

·  If you discover a fire, sound the alarm. Never panic.

·  Never use the elevators. Always use the stairs.

·  Test all doors before you open them. Use the back of your hand to feel for heat on the door and door frame.

·  If the door is hot, don't open it. Use an alternate exit.

·  Check all doors as you go.

·  Walk down the stairs, don't run.

·  If trapped, call 911, if possible.
