HOT TUBS HAVE DESIGNS ON YOUR GARDEN

At this time of year many of us think about enjoying our gardens and alfresco living, stimulated by the beautiful displays at shows such as the Chelsea Flower Show. One way to bring vibrancy to garden design is to have a body of water as a focal point, a concept that can be traced to the pools of Islamic gardens to today’s garden with a hot tub.

Although hot tubs are ideal for indoor as well as outdoor use, recent figures by the British and Irish Spa and Hot Tub Association (BISHTA), indicate more gardens with hot tubs. Sales of hot tubs during 2004 doubled over the previous year. Driving this demand is the increasing affordability of hot tubs combined with their appealing lifestyle, ideal for both relaxation and socialising.

Many homeowners have created their own garden oasis around a hot tub. Derek, 83, and Diana, in her 70s, have been fans and regular users of a hot tub for at least twenty years, having a cedar hot tub installed in the early 1980s on the patio of their detached four-bedroom home in Hindhead, Surrey. Provided by local supplier, Hindhead Hot Tubs, they turned to the company to upgrade the original hot tub to a more sophisticated 4ft teak model.

Diana, a keen gardener, has created a beautiful garden around the teak hot tub, which is sheltered on three sides and surrounded by decking.

Diana enthuses: “I wanted to create a sanctuary, with the hot tub as a place in which to unwind, complemented by a soothing scene of flowers and plants.

“The natural wood finish of the hot tub and decking provided a great backdrop for my plants. I really enjoyed creating our own private space which almost has a the feel of tropical spring.”

Hindhead Hot Tubs actively promotes good garden design and has sponsored award winning designs, at both the Chelsea Flower Show and Hampton Court Palace Flower Show.

Steve Andrews, owner of Hindhead Hot Tubs, says: “An outdoor hot tub, finished in attractive natural wood, provides a point of interest in a garden and a great way in which gardeners, as well as friends and family, can relax and enjoy their creation. Our involvement in award winning designs provides inspiration for homeowners to create their own attractive private garden space.”

In 1993, Hindhead Hot Tubs installed a teak hot tub that was a part of B&Q’s Chelsea Flower Show Gold Medal winning Living Garden, designed by David Stevens. B&Q’s The Living Garden perfectly reflected the modern approach to the garden and comprised a series of outdoor living areas designed for relaxation and maximum enjoyment with minimum of maintenance. An interesting range of textures and colours in the hard landscaped materials blended with water and fantastic planting within the composition.

The garden featured a special retreat, created by a frothing teak hot tub, surrounded by an expansive raised deck and long timber seat, with a backdrop which included Silver Birch, mixed Rhododendron, Acer, Spirea and Carcidiphyllum.

Last year, at Hampton Court Palace Flower Show, a design by Nokes Jarvis Design called Fifteen Degrees, which featured a 5ft cedarwood hot tub supplied by Hindhead Hot Tubs, was awarded a Silver Medal by the Royal Horticultural Society. The design created an innovative garden ideal for outdoor entertainment and relaxation. The garden approach was based on a 15m diameter circular design, allowing continuous viewing from all directions, pivoting on a split central relaxation space with a semi sunken hot tub at its core. A raised semi-circular lawn that gently sloped down and wrapped around the hot tub was complemented by a stone paved area in mirror image to it. To manipulate views there was a series of opaque sliding screens. An encircling ring of planting and canopy of lime trees, added shape and structure, and was underplanted with a soft mix of herbaceous plants of varying colour and texture.

To create your own garden sanctuary, Hindhead Hot Tubs provides a wide range of do it yourself cedar wood hot tubs and teak hot tubs from 4 to 6 person 5ft hot tubs from £2,990 to 6 to 8 person 6ft hot tubs from £4,990, including, ancillary equipment and VAT.
