The meeting was called to order at 9:35 AM.

Minutes from November 2008:

The November minutes were approved. Moved [Sandy Zajac] / Seconded [Angela Thor]. Approved unanimously.

Action items:

  • Penelope will send usage statistics for Doody’s out to committee members.
  • Angela will send information about the Health Literacy Coalition to members.
  • Committee members need to select 3 CE choices from the MLA’s website for consideration for a CLRC workshop.
  • Sara will email the HLSP committee members reminding them to consult the MLA’s website as well as to provide her email address to the committee members.
  • Sara will tally the results of the survey of MLA’s CE.

Budget:

  • Penelope handed out tentative budget with 18% cut. This budget does not take into account stimulus money from the federal government, which may free up state money to go to libraries.
  • CLRC has some money in reserve in order to carry the HSLP for a while.
  • The committee discussed every line of the budget.
  • The CLRC may need to do a chargeback on the databases provided. Doody’s subscription may be cancelled based on usage statistics provided by Penelope.
  • Membership dues have increased
  • The CLRC assumed a 10% increase in the fee for OCLC (as this happens yearly).
  • Angela needs a new computer so the CLRC ordered one.
  • For CE, Gale suggested a sponsorship with local businesses in order to defray the costs of workshops.
  • Another suggestion to help cover costs was to roll-over funds from next year.
  • The committee may need to send out a survey to establish user needs in order to decide what and where to cut.

MISP:

  • Received MISP funds totaling $29,000. The CLRC paid the backlog of invoices, which leaves $13,000 in MISP. Lost 2.88% of MISP money from last year.
  • Send in invoices before June of 2009 (end of grant year) because there is no sure way to determine if the money will be there next year.

Continuing Education:

  • CLRC is hosting a series of CE workshops, “Selling Yourself,” “Recruiting and Managing Volunteers,” “Extensible Cataloguing,” and an ILL workshop
  • There are preliminary negotiations with Rothman for a workshop about PubMed/Medline.
  • Committee members need to check out the MLA website for continuing education to determine what workshop they would like to attend.
  • Sara will tally the results to determine the winning CE workshop.

Circuit Report:

  • Joint Commission visits to local hospitals have had no questions for Angela
  • Oneida:
  • Lots of construction
  • Instituted a policy to block access to non-work related websites including email. Angela is unable to check her email while at Oneida which obviously hampers her work.
  • The hospital offered Angela a local email address (hosted on the Oneida servers) but she hesitates to use it lest it confuse people.
  • Penelope offered to send a letter to the director of the hospital, but Angela did not feel that was necessary at the time. It was agreed that once enough people complained, the policy would be revoked.
  • Angela took 2 courses: Caring for the Mind and Planning Managing Consumer Health Libraries
  • GoLocal (NLM)
  • NLM encourages all libraries to start program
  • People can find county by county information – such as support groups, doctors offices, etc.
  • All 3Rs support the project
  • NLM is giving money to piggy back on Rochester’s Click on Health.
  • Angela has been given training to add organizations into the database
  • There were questions about how the information would be updated – grants/volunteers.
  • Ask 24/7
  • Allows people to ask questions from librarians
  • Librarians can pass on questions that they don’t know the answers to
  • Links from various websites to Ask 24/7, including CLRC’s website
  • Health Literacy Coalition
  • Consider ways to disseminate health information to non-health professionals
  • There will be more meetings in the Syracuse area
  • Angela passed out information at meetings about GoLocal
  • Need to pass out information about CRIS

Other:

  • Introductions
  • Idea for Medical Library Update Podcast

Next meeting: April 23, 2009 at Canastota Public Library at 9:30 AM.

The meeting was adjourned at 10:40 AM.

Respectfully submitted,
