Design Plan #1 – informal design

Overview:

This introductory informal design plan is worth a total of 20 points. Its purpose is to give you experience in designing a landscape on paper that utilizes the basics of the industry. You will be presenting your plan to the class.

Assignment:

You are to develop and present a landscape design that will focus on the following aspects:

  • Balance
  • Simplicity
  • Focalization
  • Rhythm & Line
  • Scale & Proportion

Your specific assignment is to develop a design for any home that you are familiar with in central Iowa. Assume that the house you are designing the plan for does not have any plants (except lawn grass) or structures (other than a driveway and sidewalks). It is up to you to develop the basic design. Your plan will follow a budget of $6,000 maximum that is based on:

  • Trees --- $50 each
  • Shrubs --$ 20 each
  • Patio blocks --$ 1.50 per square foot
  • Decking --$ 5.00 per square foot
  • Fences --$ 6.00 per linear foot
  • Chain link --$ 4.00 per linear foot
  • Concrete --$ 120 per cubic yard
  • Mulch --$ 35 per cubic yard
  • Perennial plants -- $ 15.00 each
  • Annual plants -- $ 2.00 each

The clients you are designing this house for have 2 teenage daughters (ages 12 and 16). The family enjoys outdoor activities. Their house is on a corner lot in town that is 100 feet by 150 feet. The property is nearly level and has a rich loam soil. The house has an attached garage that has 3 stalls.

Procedures:

  1. Decide upon a scale to use.
  2. Design the house to scale size onto the lot.
  3. Begin developing the structures into the plan according to the scale size.
  4. Begin the development of plants into the plan according to the scale size.
  5. Have developed a key that identifies the plants being used.
  6. Be sure to go over all lines to make them darkened and easy to see.
  7. You will be presenting your design plans to the class.

Grading:

  1. Describe the ‘theme’ of your landscape plan. (3 points possible)
  1. How do you hope to accomplish this theme? (3 points possible)
  1. Think in terms of your own home (and/or a home of someone you are familiar with). How does the landscaping of this home meet the five basic objectives of home landscaping? What would need to be done to accomplish those objectives? (2 points possible).
  1. Answer this question following your presentation: What do you like most about your plan (including your presentation)? If you were to do this plan over (including the presentation), what would you do differently and why? (2 points possible)
