Standards
This SVQ is based on standards developed by Lantra. Lantra draws its membership from a wide variety of people working in a broad range of occupations within the tending animals, plants and land industry.
Structure of the SVQ
The way the SVQ is made up is shown below. The unit title appears in bold and the elements that make up each unit are listed under the unit title.
Mandatory units
Candidates must complete all of these units:
Plan and Monitor Routine Care
1 Plan diets and implement feeding regimes
2 Monitor and maintain stocks of feed and bedding
Promote and Maintain the Health and Well-Being of Horses
1 Promote the health and well-being of horses
2 Deliver basic health care treatment of horses
Prepare Horses for Work
1 Tack up horses for specialist work
2 Prepare horses for public appearance
3 Clip horses
Maintain the Health and Well-Being of Horses During Transportation
1 Prepare for transportation
2 Care for horses during and after transportation
Maintain Activities to Meet Requirements
1 Maintain work activities to meet requirements
2 Maintain healthy, safe and productive working conditions
3 Make recommendations for improvements to work activities
Ensure your Own Actions Reduce risks to Health and Safety
1 Identify the hazards and evaluate the risks in your workplace
2 Reduce the risks to health and safety in your workplace

Contribute to the Design and Implementation of a Work Programme for Horses

Group B – Schooling

Group C – Light Horse Driving
Prepare Driving Horses and Vehicles for Use and Contribute to the Daily Exercise Programmes for Driving Horses

Drive Horses on the Road
1 Carry out road driving manoeuvres
2 Attend to horses and vehicles after driving
Group D – Heavy Horses

Work Heavy Horses
1 Work a pair of heavy horses
