Spring 2017
Hope you all had an enjoyable Christmas holidays and we welcome you back. We are looking forward to a new and exciting school term, full of successes. Our topic for this term is geography based, we will be looking at France and America.
Our English and topic work is now called ‘significant learning’ which means that there will be lots of cross curriculum links, giving children opportunities to develop their learning further by using the skills they learn in all aspects of their development.
We will be sharing many stories to hook the children in and use these as a stimulus for our English, Science, PSHE and Artwork.
The main aim of the topic is for the children to develop a greater understanding of the world whilst learning important skills such as map reading.
We will be continuing with our RWI spelling programme this term, as well as focusing on the end of keystage spellings. Please ensure your child practices their spellings at home.
Each child will be in a reciprocal reading group where they will read with an adult at various times during the week.
Children will continue to have additional grammar and handwriting lessons. Children will be learning a wide range of new grammatical vocabulary and punctuation to prepare them for their grammar, punctuation and spelling test (GPS test).
Maths: Children will be consolidating their knowledge from previous years and will be continuing working through the year 6 curriculum. This term we will be focusing on decimals, percentages, ratio, algebra, shape and measurement. They will be learning to apply skills through problem solving and will need to be able to explain the links between a range of mathematical processes.
The children will be sitting regular practise sats papers this term, each time they will be aiming to beat their current personal best. Once we have discussed and gone through the completed papers in class the children will bring these home. Please support your child at home with these as this will give them confidence and encouragement.
PE: will be on a Wednesday, outside weather permitting. Please ensure children have their full PE kit which consists of plimsolls, shorts, jogging bottoms, T-shirt and a jumper. Please ensure this is in school every day. Children with medium-long hair must be tied back. Earrings need to be removed on this day otherwise they are unable to take part.
PSHE: This half term celebration assembly will be based on children showing pride in their learning and appearance. Please try and encourage this at home.
HOMEWORK
Children will be regularly bring home homework books for maths and English which we will be using as a revision tool. Please encourage your children to complete the pages which they have been set at home.
.
REMINDER
Please ensure children always have their book bags/wallets in school with their reading diary inside. This way comments can be written in their diary which can help you to support your child at home.
The school will be continuing their reading reward scheme, many of the children have received bronze badges and a few have received silver! Well done to those children.
Each child should read to an adult daily; this should then be recorded in their reading diary. Reading diaries must be in school on a Friday, where their reads for the week will be counted.
