Chapter 3 Journals
Choose any two of the journal prompts from below (1-3) to answer OR you may choose to write on the History of Trigonometric Terms (see separate writing instructions below). Please include the prompt # and prompt before you start your journaling. You may hand-write, type,or send an electronic version (Word attachment via email)of your journals. Please keep in mind that all sentences in journals/writing must be "complete." Please, note the due date that is on your syllabus for your journal choices. If you are sending an electronic attachment, it must be sent by a time that is prior to the meeting time of your class on that day and must include your full name and class hour at the top (header). Ifyour electronic attachment has "techinical difficulties,"a grade of zero will be earned - no excuses. My email is
1. Explain the difference between a radian measure of an angle and a degree measure of an angle. In your explanation, you must include the way to convert one type of angle measure to the other (radians to degrees AND degrees to radians).
2. Describe the difference, given a circle, between finding the area of a sector of that circle, and finding an arc length of that circle. A diagram and clear examples of each must be shown.
3. Describe the difference, between finding linear velocity, and finding an angular velocity. Clear examples of each must be shown.
History of Trigonometric Terms
On page 124 Connections, there is a discussion about the history of trigonometric terms. Write a paragraph (or more) expanding on the information, or choose one of the mathematicians listed and write about his contribution to trigonometry. You must cite your source(s) for this piece of writing.
Plagiarism will earn you a zero.

Just a few reminders for our class as we start our first chapter…
*When you are absent, please follow the syllabus for missed assignments. Please note that dates & assignments above are tentative and may have been changed while you were out - check with me at the end of the hour once you have returned.
*Assignments are “mandatory.” If you choose not to do an assignment/problem, it will reflect on a homework quiz grade.
*If you know you are going to be absent (pre-arranged absence), please work ahead and request any needed materials from me well in advance so that you are caught-up upon your return to class.
* When the bell rings each day, be ready to start with notes and/or homework questions (from previous day). I try to give you as much time as I can for work/questions in class, so it is essential that you are ready when the bell rings.

1. In your own words define domain, range, and function. Give an example to help explain your definitions.
2. Discuss how an angle is put into standard position. What do clockwise and counterclockwise rotations represent? Give examples to support your explanation.
3. Trigonometric functions are positive in two quadrants and negative in two quadrants. Discuss which functions are positive/negative in which quadrants and explain what makes them positive/negative.
4. The domain for the trigonometric functions is, for the most part, all reals; however, their range values differ. Discuss the range values for each of the six functions.
