HATBORO-HORSHAM HIGH SCHOOL MATHEMATICS

Honors Probability, Statistics and Extended Topics

Fall, 2015

Dear Parent or Guardian,

Allow me to welcome you and your child to Probability, Statistics and Extended Topics. I look forward to teaching this class each year because of the exciting concepts and lessons it involves, and the opportunity I have to help our new 9th graders explore worlds beyond middle-school math. This course can be thought of as two mini-courses

PROBABILITY AND STATISTICSA BRIDGE TO ALGEBRA 2

Probability Rules and TechniquesSequences and Series

Counting PrinciplesMatrices and Algebraic Connections

Probability Distributions: Normal / Binomial3-variable linear systems

Measures of Center and VariabilityLinear Programming

Sampling and EstimationFunctions, inverses and transformations

HOMEWORK: Homework will be assigned on a regular basis. Homework assignments will be an extension of material covered in class and will help your child to practice and become proficient with concepts being learned. Due to the importance and relevance of homework assignments, it is important that students consistently put forth their best effort on all assignments. Homework assignments will be randomly checked for completeness and will count towards a student’s grade.

CLASS INFORMATION: If you have any questions about any tests, quizzes, etc., you can check the calendar on my website by going typing in or going to navigating to the High School page, then, under Staff, selecting Greenberg. I strongly encourage you to utilize my website as it can be an excellent tool for keeping current with the course. Additionally, I will post answer keys, review packets and other material on my website for students to access and use.

We will also be using Remind for class announcements:

text the message @greens4th to the number 81010 to sign up for announcements

EXTRA HELP: Due to Department Chair responsibilities, I do not have an official HATS period, but will offer “office hours” during 3C throughout the week. Extra help can always be arranged ahead of time.

GRADING GUIDELINES: Marking period grades will be determined by an average of tests, quizzes, homework and classwork. Each marking period will count 40% of the semester grade. There will also be a final exam at the end of the semester worth 20% of the semester grade.

CALCULATORS/OTHER MATERIALS: A scientific calculator is required for this course. Although a graphing calculator is not required; if you plan on eventually taking a calculus course, now may be a good time to consider purchasing a graphing calculator. I am also asking that students have a set of dry erase markers. Students will frequently be doing work at the board and/or on their desks and my supply of dry erase markers will run out before the end of the semester.

I am looking forward to an exciting and rewarding semester with your son/daughter. I would like to encourage you to be involved in your child’s education. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at the high school (215.420.5595) or email . Thank you in advance for helping your child reach his/her potential. Please sign the attached note, verifying that you have read the requirements for this course.

Sincerely,

Mr. Jim Greenberg
