Honors Physics – Homework Assignment #2

  1. Calculate the following (be sure to use proper significant figures and directions):

a)  If your bus travels 12.0 km to the east in 0.63 h, what is your average velocity?

b)  In traveling from Pennsylvania to California, you travel 1235 km in 14.23 hours the first day. What is your average velocity?

c)  You are traveling at an average velocity of 32.4 m/s to the south. How many kilometers do you travel in a 12.0 hour period?

  1. After winning a football game, the team boards the bus and travels home. They drive for 32.0 min at 85.0 km/hr, then 15.0 min at 100.0 km/hr, then they stop for 45.0 min to eat, and then finally drive 40.0 more minutes at 57.0 km/hr.

a)  What is the total distance traveled?

b)  What is the average speed for this trip?

c)  Can you calculate the average velocity from the information given? If so, what is it? If not, why not?

  1. A car has an initial velocity of +23.5 m/s. If it accelerates at a rate of +1.20 m/s2, how fast is it traveling after 8.50 s?
  1. A bug crawls a distance of 1.73 m, in a straight line. If the bug started from rest, and was traveling at 0.350 m/s by the end of the trip, how long did it take to crawl the 1.73 m?
  1. If the bug in problem 4 took 5.77 s to travel the same 1.73 m distance, what was its initial velocity? (assume it still has a final velocity of 0.350 m/s)
  1. While accelerating at a rate of 4.00 m/s2, a bicyclist who started out with a velocity of 8.00 m/s travels a distance of 1650 m. How long does this take?
  1. If a person were to begin running at a rate of 1.00 m/s around a 4.00 x 102 m track, and accelerate uniformly at 0.200 m/s2, how fast would this person be running at the end of the race?
