Dean of Research – James Cook University

This is Orpheus Island Research Station which is actually within the Orpheus Island National Park, right on the Great Barrier Reef.

A lot of the original work about coral spawning and understanding the timing of coral spawning came from this station. So it’s really developed our understanding of coral biology to a huge extent.

During a five-day research project the students learned about climate change, sea level rise and environment impacts on the reef

Bill Liddle
Head of science department – Trinity Bay State High School

Them being able to see the Great Barrier Reef is really an exciting part of the trip. When they are diving under the water for the first time they’re seeing some of the amazing fish life, some of the great coral life, some of the clams that we’ve seen earlier today. It’s a big ‘wow’ factor for them and that gives us a lot of joy as teachers.

Classes took place in the ocean, among the mangroves and around the national park. On the reef flats the students met the island’s giant clams

Veronica from Germany
Trinity Bay State High School

I’m here to do marine research and science studies, for example, about the mangroves and the sea life.

This Queensland Government partnership with JCU is one of many ways we aim to give students a deeper understanding of the world to empower them with the knowledge and skills to meet the challenges of the future

Federico from Italy

How do they live in water and why some leaves are green and some are yellow? Today we did an experiment on the saltiness in green and yellow leaves, why it is different. We got some different results and we still have to work on that.

Rémi from Brazil
Trinity Bay State High School

I chose this course to see if it’s really what I want (to study). Now I’m looking where I want to do my college. If it’s here in James Cook University or stay in Brazil.

Federico:

I really enjoyed it; I did a lot of amazing stuff and saw amazing places.

Rémi:

The Barrier Reef is wonderful; the people here are great.

Veronica:

They should totally do it. You will never forget it in your whole life. It’s great.
