Wednesday, March 31st:

Monday, March 29th:

  • No journal
  • Collected Wild Card #1 rough drafts
  • CollectedCuckoo's Nestbooks (if you didn't turn yours in today, please bring it next block!)
  • Classwork: A little laughter! (based off one of the novel's themes....)
  • Classwork:Painless Grammar(oxymoron?)...we will be working on some grammar issues next quarter. We began today by copying comma rules from the above textbook. (If absent, please copy from a classmate.) Keep in "Language Notes" section
  • Homework: No "official" homework. Wednesday will be an in-class portfolio work day. Bring flash drives

and portfolio folders. Shells will be passed back. Everyone must work!

Thursday, March 25th:

  • Passed back graded "Hard Rock" handouts

FinishedCuckoo's Nestpaideia--- the other group discussed and the talking group from Tuesday turned in written thoughts

  • Homework: Complete a 1st rough draft of Wild Card #1 (as per your handout, 2 of your wild cards will be revised and 2 will be reflected upon--- choose wisely!). BTW- I will collect novels on Monday. Next Wednesday will be an in-class portfolio work day.

Tuesday, March 23rd:

  • Submitted "Hard Rock" worksheet from last block
  • Began paideia forCuckoo's Nest- one group discussed; the second group wrote their thoughts. IF YOU WERE ABSENT, YOU MUST SEE ME TOMORROW FOR A MAKE-UP ESSAY DUE THIS WEEK.
  • Submitted secondary sources and "thought" sheets (The groups that will discuss on Monday will get their secondary sources back.)
  • Homework: Bring in Wild Card #1 Original for portfolio- must be underclass writing. See portfolio assignment sheet for details.

Thursday, March 11th:

  • Journal #3: We talked about the education budget issues in our state and city and thepush for "NoChild Left Behind." Our journals were based on those topics.
  • SUBMITTED PORTFOLIO SHELLS!
  • 1A only: discussedCuckoo's Nest reading and took notes on "look fors" for Christ references in novels (to lead to a future discussion on MacMurphy as a Christ figure). 2A:We will add this on Monday!

Visitor surprise!!! Both classeslistened to a group of OLHS alumni speak about their college experiences and were able to ask questions about college concerns.

  • Books were handed out (based on prior requests) to students who need them for their senior literary analyses.
  • Homework: 1- Read through page 309 of the novel 2- Complete your roughdraft of your senior literary analysis (reminder: if you reflected on your underclass lit. analysis, you need to revise this one and vice versa)

Tuesday, February 23rd:

  • Quiz #3- Cuckoo's Nest (based on song lyrics- more Pink Floyd!)
  • Classwork: Developed a character chart for the novel for the pages we have read thus far. Included important events they have been a part of or influenced, and their relationship with McMurphy and/or Chief Bromden. Used page numbers when applicable. Include the following characters:McMurphy, Ratched, Chief, Billy Bibbit, Dale Harding, Pete Bancini, Charles Cheswick, Ellis, Frederickson, Geever, Martini, Colonel Matterson, Nurse Pilbow, Public Relation, Rawler, Ruckley, Sefelt, and Dr. Spivey. Leave space for major characters for later additions!
  • Homework: 1- Finish reading Part II of the novel (title chart, theme annotations) 2- Bring in an original draft of an underclass literary analysis (must be from grades 9, 10 or 11 and must be a paper analyzing some piece of literature...could be a poem, short story, novel....could even be an essay from a test)

  • Passed out folders for students to use as their portfolio folders- will be turned in in May with portfolio CDs

  • Homework: Read pages 42-84 of the novel (you should be annotating with sticky notes and filling out your title chart as you read each assignment)

Thursday, February 11th:

  • Journal #1: Discuss some of your pet peeves.
  • Collected metaphor poems: highlighted and labeled the poetic devices
  • Discussed what is due for the portfolio on March 11- "the shell": all 8 pages, working links on all pages, all pictures, movie clips, music, a finished homepage (see the link from February 5th), and a paragraph on each grade-level page discussing how your metaphor relates to you during that grade level
  • Introduced values essays (see explanation on your original portfolio instructions)
  • Handout:Title Chart.docx. You should be filling out this chart as you read all Cuckoo's Nest reading assignments
  • Discussed themes/ motifs of Cuckoo"s Nest- made a list. Students need to choose 3 themes/ motifs to follow along in the text. As you're reading, you need to mark these references using sticky notes. I will check them randomly.
  • Discussed pages 1-14.
  • Homework: 1- Read through page 41 of the novel (filling out the title chart and marking references- including significant quotes and literary elements) 2- Rough draft of values essay due

Tuesday, February 9th:

  • Collected permission slips- final day!
  • 1A only: letter passed out to discuss upcoming testing...if you were absent, please see me for one!
  • Cleaned out notebooks from 1st semester
  • Passed back Hamlet essays- reviewed some major essay rules
  • Classwork: Read 2 articles introducing the historical context of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest- took notes on the articles. (If you were absent, please see me for a copy of the packet or see a classmate for a copy of his or her notes.)
  • Viewed a short film introducing the novel- took notes. (If absent, please see a classmate for notes. Very important!)
  • Passed out new novels- One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
