HONORS/ADVANCED PLACEMENT CLASSES

ADVANCED PLACEMENT COURSES (AP) are college-level courses for high school students. At the conclusion of AP courses, students must take the Advanced Placement Examination and, depending on their scores, may be granted college credit. The amount of credit is determined by the college. Students must pay for these tests. The cost is approximately $89.00. Scholarships will be available to those who qualify.

CRITERIA FOR PLACEMENT IN HONORS/ADVANCED PLACEMENT CLASSES

A student must meet two of the three following criteria:

1. An 85 national percentile or higher on a nationally standardized achievement test in the specific subject area.

2. An 85 national percentile or higher on a nationally standardized achievement test on the total battery score OR A 115 SAS or higher on a nationally standardized ability test.

3 An A- average or higher in a non-weighted previous year’s subject-specific class.

OR A B- average or higher in a weighted previous year’s subject-specific class.

A student who has been identified as gifted in the specific subject area on any nationally standardized test given in grades 7-12 and has, at least, a “C” average or higher in the previous year’s class will have automatic placement in the honors/advanced placement course. A student who meets the criteria but does not have gifted identification is not insured placement in these courses.
