-Honey, take me to some lovely place! We haven’t been going out for ages!

-Ok, my pumpkin, where do you want to go? To the theatre or may be to the art gallery?

-Oh, let’s just eat somewhere! What do you think about that French restaurant we were eating last time?

-My dear, I don’t really like such places, it’s too official, pretentious and people seem to be too mannered, I consider they don’t come there to eat delicious food, but to peacock, to show what big shorts they are. Saying about food it isn’t worth its price! We paid 500 dollars for 5 prawns in special sauce.

-Pff, are you a skinflint?

-You, you are insulting me no end. My sweety, I just want to say I wish to eat simple nourishing food like some tender well-done steak with potatoes at a cosy place!

-Ooooh, how boring! And where should we go in this case? To a pancake house at the corner?? I want to dress up, to flaunt my jewellery in public, my new dress at the incredible restaurant with a marvelous design.

-Ah, are you one of those people I was describing?

-I just want to feel beautiful! You never tell me that I am!

-Ok, I’m sorry my honey, what about Chinese restaurant?

-Are you kidding!? We have been living together for 5 years! Can’t you remember I hate rice and seafood??

-Oh, Judy, calm down!

-Ok, I have an idea! Don’t you mind going to the “East Paradise” on the High Road? It’s an Indian restaurant, the service is perfect here and we can eat Aloo Gobhi, it’s a dish, made of potatoes and cauliflower cooked with Indian spices or Dal Makhani - Indian pulses cooked with cream and spices…

-What…? Spicy food! I’ve got a gastric ulcer! Just go to the restaurant with someone else! I’m going to visit my mum on weekend and to eat meat, also I’ll ask her to make pancakes and I’ll be eating them with my favorite raspberry jam!!!

-Oooooh! Great! Good luck at mum’s! Don’t forget to ask her to give you a bib, Martin! I’m going to the restaurant with Kelly instead!

Male: Well, we decided to go to the restaurant on the corner of Rose Street, you know, the one that serves Mexican food, because it was Susie's birthday. It was a good idea. The food was of very high quality-hot and spicy! The service was efficient and friendly. There was a Mexican band playing for part of the evening so the atmosphere was lively. I gasped when I took a look at the bill though. An expensive evening, but it was certainly worth it.

Female: I couldn't be bothered cooking last night, so I took the kids out to our local fast food joint. I have to say that the quality of the food was good—it wasn't greasy or too salty. I can't fault them on that... and they were quick. I couldn't stand the atmosphere though. It was really noisy as they were playing loud music. It's amazing, you always tend to think that fast food is cheap, but that's not true anymore. This place was way overpriced!

Male: I took Jenny out for pizza at Giancarlos last night. We hadn't been there for a while and I'd forgotten how good it was. All the pizzas are home-made —none of that shop bought, pizza base rubbish, and only the freshest ingredients are used. The service was friendly and unhurried- as it is in every Italian restaurant I've been to. And that gave it a very relaxed and comfortable atmosphere. It was a good night out and excellent value for money. [1]

Imagine my excitement when I was asked to review Marcus Rose's new restaurant, The Three Roses, in north-west London. I was expecting great things from the internationally acclaimed chef and his hand-selected team - and I wasn't disappointed. This is contemporary British cuisine at its very finest, using only the freshest ingredients. We both chose from the a la carte menu and were very satisfied with our choices. My fish came in an exquisite creamy sauce whose richness was beautifully balanced by a generous portion of seasonal vegetables which were cooked to perfection. (I had a side order of sauteed potatoes too, so lightly fried that they almost tasted healthy!) My companion was similarly impressed by her onion tart - one of several enticing vegetarian options - a delicious combination of caramelised onions and crisp pastry that seemed to melt in the mouth, accompanied by a beautifully dressed green salad. Two delicious desserts followed - a light-as-air cheesecake and an extremely tasty apple tart. The freshly ground coffee that accompanied them came with two perfect home-made chocolates.

We were both very impressed by the efficient service. A young but well-trained staff and some very subtle lighting help to create a most relaxed atmosphere in this elegant, modern restaurant. I should also say that, for this quality of food, the prices are quite reasonable. This restaurant is a rare find indeed.

Marcus Rose has opened a new restaurant, The Three Roses, in north-west London. I dined there yesterday evening, with high hopes for my meal. To say I was disappointed is an understatement. I'm afraid to say that this is contemporary British cuisine at its very worst -a depressing combination of over-cooked meat and soggy vegetables and all at outrageously inflated prices. We both had the set menu (two courses + coffee). For my main course I chose the salmon (dry and tasteless) with a side order supposedly of 'sauteed potatoes' which turned out to be nothing more than a pile of greasy chips. My companion was similarly unimpressed by her main course - a bland onion tart (whose pastry was so hard that when she did manage to cut into it, a piece of it flew across the restaurant and hit a fellow diner) accompanied by a rather limp salad (I suspect the lettuce was a few days old). To make up for the disappointment of our main courses, we both ordered rich desserts, a chocolate mousse for my companion and a lemon tart for me. Both were heavy and oversweet. And to cap it all, at the end of this very substandard meal, we were offered instant coffee! Another irritation was the lighting in the restaurant, which was so dim I could scarcely read the menu, and when I asked for help with this our waiter rudely suggested that I use my glasses. I should also add that the restaurant was so short-staffed yesterday evening that we struggled to get the waiter's attention. Needless to say, we didn't add a tip to the already excessively expensive bill.

Steven: Shall we go out on Saturday night?

Kate: Oh yes, let's.

Steven: Where do you fancy going?

Kate: Why don't we go out for dinner? Then we can go and see a show or something.

Steven: Sounds good to me. Why don't we go to that Chinese restaurant, you know, the one on the High Street?

Kate: Mmm. It's a bit expensive though.

Steven: Oh yes, you're right.

Kate: What about the Ethiopian restaurant?

Steven: I've never been there.... What's the food like?

Kate: Oh, it's delicious. Last time I went with Bob and Carol, we shared a large platter. They give you something like a big pancake and then they put little piles of different types of food on it, which you eat with the pancake. It's very different. Steven: Is it spicy?

Kate: Oh, yes .... I forgot, you don't like spicy food. Sorry.

Steven: I've got it. Let's go to the little French bistro, the one with the chef from Marseilles. He makes the most fantastic bouillabaisse!

Kate: Bouilla... what?

Steven: Bouillabaisse- it's a thick soup made with fish and vegetables. It's really tasty. Oh hang on— I've just remembered, that place closed down last month.

Kate: Well, we can't go there then, can we? Oh, where shall we go?

Steven: Tell you what — let's go to that Italian restaurant. It's cheap, it's near here and I know you like Italian food.

Kate: Ah yes, Marcello's — mmm. Steven: Okay. I'll book a table. Is 9 o'clock all right?

Kate: Fine…Now what show shall we go afterwards?... [ 1]
