HON. SECRETARY’S REPORT TO AGM 2011

Dear Members,

Well, the year 2011 has drawn to a close already and it seems only yesterday we were crouching under the trees in Millicent trying to get some relief from the elements. The guiding hand of our Captain Sean McSherry oversaw a very comprehensive and enjoyable programme of events this year with only two outings hindered by rain.

The following were the highlights that I hope will help you reflect on the year in terms of success/failure and enjoyment.

MEMBERSHIP:

The Society’s register showed a total of sixty nine (69) members, i.e. twenty three (23) ordinary members, thirty (30) Hon. Retired members, eleven (11) Ord. Retired, two (2) Hon. Sponsors and three (3) Associate members for the year.

OUTINGS:

In the year under review we held eight (8) outings inclusive of today. We also participated in the National Championships and DUGSA competitions. The attendance figures as shown on the table below were fractionally down on last year but were still very much as anticipated.

SINGLES MATCHPLAY:

This year sixteen (16) members participated in the Singles Matchplay competition for the Technico Silver Salver. The final brought together Mick Cronin and Bill Conway and after a tough battle Mick proved the better and emerged victorious. Congratulations to both players and thanks to all other participants.

FOURBALL MATCHPLAY:

Eight (8) teams entered the Fourball Matchplay for the Interphones Trophy. The final was between the Tipperary duo of Ray Ryan / Willie Buckley and Christy O Driscoll / Paul Bradley. Christy and Paul claimed victory in Beech Park to ensure they retained the title for a second year in a row. Now who is prepared to ensure they don’t make it 3 in a row in 2012?

PRESIDENT’S DAY:

The President, Peter Kelly brought us to Kilcock Golf Club on the 8th July for his big day. This proved a typical Irish weather day with the early starters getting the best of the weather before it turned nasty for the late starters. A big thanks to everyone involved for a most enjoyable day. We had the biggest turnout of the year and the very popular winner was Brian Devereux with a score of 39 points leaving the runner-up spot to Tom Flanagan on 38 points. Well done to everyone and congratulations also to Brian on winning the Captain’s Prize at Castlewarden Golf Club.

CAPTAIN’S DAY:

The Major event of our golfing calendar saw a turnout of 59 competitors in the famed European Golf Club for Sean’s big day. The enormous array of prizes was a fitting tribute to a most popular Captain. Michael Johnson with a score of 33 points won the Captain’s Prize and relegated Fergus Flynn into second place with 32 points and Christy O Driscoll into 3rd place with 31 points. Congratulations to Michael on a great win. He certainly proved to be the man in form as he also won the previous outing at Newlands Golf Club.

The weather on the day was also brilliant and the European Club was a wonderful venue for the competition. Special thanks to the Captain, members and staff of the European Golf Club for the use of the course and for their courtesy and assistance on the day.

Congratulations to Sean for a marvellous prize and for ensuring that the splendid course and facilities that the European Club offered were made available to us.

GOLFERS THE YEAR 2011:

RETIRED G.O.Y.

This year as usual saw a very competitive battle for the Retired Golfer of Year competition, it was won by Fergus Flynn who was level with Paddy Stapleton after the best five cards so we had to go to the sixth cards to find a winner. Well done Fergus.

D.U.G.S.A.:

The D.U.G.S.A. Challenge Cup initially scheduled for Turvey Golf Club was eventually held in Castlewarden Golf Club, due to the closure of Turvey. The qualifying rounds were played on 29th& 30th Augand the final on the 5th Sept. This is a wonderful inter-society competition and this year it was agreed to enter two teams as we had good interest from the members and we also have Paddy McSteen and Christy O’Driscoll on the DUGSA committee.

Our teams under the stewardship of the Vice Captain Noel McClean and Pádhraig Carr were:

Monday’s team;- Peter Kelly/Phil Kelly, Brian Devereux/Ted Donegan and Barney McCann/Mick Johnson. Tuesdays team;- Paul Bradley/Peter Murphy, Padhraig Carr/Mick Cronin and Noel McClean/Tony McGowan.

In what was a marvellous achievement both team were successful in their quest to qualify with Peter Kelly/Phil Kelly winning the Gross on Monday and Pádhraig Carr /Mick Cronin winning the gross prize on Tuesday. The final day proved to be an interesting affair with both teams vying for the top prize. Unfortunately, overall victory eluded both team, but bragging rights went to the Tuesday team (with yours truly an able deputy for Michael Cronin) who finishing third overall with a fine score of 227.5 points. Commiseration’s to Paul Bradley/Peter Murphy who lost out on the gross prize on a count-back, on the last six holes. Congratulations to Rathcoole Masters who won with 220.5 and runner up Banba on 223 points.

NATIONAL GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP

This year the National Golf Championship was again held at Athlone Golf Club and was hosted by the Portlaoise District. This proved to be a great test of golf and a superb venue for the competition. Unfortunately the weather spoiled the party again which made scoring quite difficult. The team and supporters under the leadership of our Captain Sean McSherry and President Peter Kelly did battle to try and win this prestigious event again, but were unsuccessful in their quest. Galway were the victors by five points from the hosts Portlaoise. Congratulations to our own Barney McCann who won the gross prize on the day.

Compliments to the staff of Athlone G.C. and The Hodson Bay Hotel for the hospitality shown to everybody. The team consisted of Pádhraig Carr, Michael Cronin, Bill Conway, Barney McCann, Peter Murphy, Paddy Stapleton, Brian Devereux and Willie Buckley. We are so proud of you all boys and well done and hard luck. You can’t win them all.

SPONSORS & BENEFACTORS:

Sincere thanks to all our sponsors, who by their support throughout the year, contributed so much towards making 2011 such an outstanding success for our Society and its members. Special thanks to Donal Quinn & Son General Engineering Ltd, KN Networks and E.S.C.C.U. (Credit Union) who very generously sponsored the National Championships prizes. Once again I would like to convey on behalf of all our members our heartfelt appreciation for their generosity over the years.

CAPTAIN’S DAY ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS:

Our members will have noticed the excellent array of prizes at our Captain’s Day and we are forever in debt to our Captain’s Day Sponsors for their continued support and generous donations.

Captain’s day sponsors for 2011 were: ESCCU, 3M Ireland Ltd., Sean McSherry, Noel McClean, Willie Buckley, Christy O Driscoll, Paddy Stapleton, Andy Mason, Bill Conway and Billy Moore.

OBITUARYS:

It was with great sadness that we lost one of our former members Paddy McGuirk, R.I.P., during the year. Indeed, Paddy served as Hon Secretary for 8 years, was Captain in 1984 and President in 1991. No doubt he is walking the fairways up above as we speak. “Ar dheis de go raibh a anam uasal“. The Society sends our sympathy and prayers to all members who have lost family and friends this year.

2011 RAFFLE:

Following on the success of the previous year’s raffles from 2005 the Committee found it necessary to continue with the raffle in 2011 due to the loss of sponsorship. It has proven to be an excellent venture and has been a great financial boost over the last few years. It was decided once again to have one main raffle on Presidents’ Day in Kilcock on the 8th of July.

Huge gratitude must go to Willie Buckley, who single handily organised and secured sponsorship of €3,325 worth of raffle prizes, distributed and collected tickets and monies at each outing to make this a success on our behalf. However, while a considerable profit was achieved, it was disappointing to see that some members (11) didn’t bother selling any tickets, or even return their ticket allocation. In fact, on the draw date if members had returned their allocation we would have been able to sell some more tickets and this is a serious loss to our coffers. Despite that fact, as can be seen from the table below, a profit of €4,410 was recorded which will help keep the cost of outings to the members as low as possible for 2011 – 2012. The Society is also very grateful to Joe Robinson who for the third year in a row secured sponsorship again this year for the top prizes in the raffle. Thank you Joe.

I would also like to especially thank Willie Buckley and to assure him that we, the Committee and members, appreciate his efforts both this year and previous years too. This Society owes you a great deal of gratitude, for your contribution to its financial upkeep over the past seven years when you have raised a staggering total of €32,410. Thanking you again. You are a hard act to follow.

The main prize in the raffle was sold by Pat Good. Well done and congrats to Pat and all the other winners too.

CONCLUSION:

I’m sure you will agree we have had a successful year and indeed one of the main highlights has to be the launch of our website on Fri 6th May in Balcarrick. This was a major time consuming project undertaking by that man again Willie Buckley, which I’m sure you will agree, looks and performs brilliantly. Thanks to everyone who supplied information and photographs for inclusion and if you feel there is more that can be added don’t hesitate to let us know. Please do take time to read through the many snippets of history, and look at the many photos on the site and also the time sheet, which we endeavour to have up the week before each outing.

On the time sheet it was great to see us getting members on the course slightly ahead of schedule at the last couple of outings. This has always been a problem area, caused mainly by dropouts in the last few days, leaving gaps in the sheet and then players only arriving for their own time. It greatly assists the starters if members arrive early and are agreeable to go out ahead of their time within other slots. This means we can keep the groups full and not having two balls in the middle of three balls meaning everyone can play at the same pace. Please remember you do have an obligation, to adhere to the time sheet, be on time and be present for presentations etc.

I would like to thank all of the Officers and Committee members for their help and co-operation over the past year. I hope you will agree that the above details are an accurate account of the Society’s activities over the past twelve months. To have put together and carried out such an extensive programme is to the credit of our popular Captain Sean McSherry and his Committee who worked tirelessly for the benefit of our Society and its members. Thanks to all the members for their support and help that made my task, as Secretary, much easier. To Ted Donegan who was always on hand (before he jumped ship ) to guide me and give me the benefit of his vast experience and to Willie Buckley for keeping me on the straight and narrow and keeping the finances in such a healthy state. Thanks to Paddy McSteen who is responsible for providing all the labels and statistics, which are essential for every outing.

A sincere word of thanks to John Dennis, Derry McEvoy, Christy Penrose, Larry Gilmartin for the onerous task of checking the score cards at each outing and producing the results. Their patience was really tested this year in the European Club when we experimented with the split tee start. You really pulled out all the stops without complaint, thanks guys. Thanks also to Paul Bradley for looking after the Singles and Fourball Matchplay draws; to Noel McClean and Pádhraig Carr for managing the successful DUGSA teams; to Peter Kelly, Noel McClean, Paul Bradley, Joe Robinson, and Pádhraig Carr for tee-box control. Thanks also to Colm Hyland for his assistance with signs and artwork again during the year and to all the committee, my appreciation for the dedication and commitment in the task of running our Society. To you the members my sincere thanks for your friendliness, co-operation and courtesy at all our outings.

As most of you are no doubt aware Willie Buckley has managed the annual draw for the last seven years and has now decided he should step down. This is a major concern for us all, as we now need to find a replacement, which will somehow continue the good work. Therefore I am asking all of you to consider coming forward with new ideas, and the offer of assistance to ensure our Society is kept on a sound financial footing.

In closing may I, on your behalf, and my own, say a sincere thank you, to our Captain Sean McSherry and President Peter Kelly, for their courtesy, commitment and leadership during 2011. May I also wish every success to our incoming Captain Noel McClean and President Peter Murphy and their team for 2012.

Yours in Golf

Andy Mason

HON. SECRETARY’S REPORT TO THE 2012 A.G.M.

Dear Members,

Welcome to my report of the eircom Engineers Golf Society outings and activities for 2012. Under the leadership of our popular Captain Noel McClean we had a very successful year in my opinion, but please read on and form your own conclusions.
