Kindergarten 101

  • Guest Reader: We have guest readers in our classroom on Fridays. We will do this at 8:45 or 12:00 in our classroom. If you (or anyone in your family) would like to do this, let us know.
  • Cooking in the Classroom: On Friday afternoons we will be cooking in our classroom. We will send home notes for special ingredients by Wednesday. If you cannot bring an ingredient, please let us know by Thursday so we can pick it up.
  • Homework: Occasional homework will be sent home.
  • Read with your child: In Kindergarten we teach the students to read by (1) read the pictures (2) reading the words (3) retelling the story. Use these strategies when reading with your child at home. Your child will bring home paper books to read at home. Please have your child read these to you. Sign them, and return them to school.
  • Backpack and Folder: Your child will need a medium/large backpack and a durable folder.
  • Supply Fee: We purchase all of the supplies (pencils, glue, scissors, erasers, etc.) We like all of our supplies to be the same for all of the students. You will need to pay Lois a $20.00 supply fee to cover the cost of supplies. Please pay this as soon as you can.
  • Clothing: Remember to put your child’s name in anything they can take off. It’s easier to find your child’s things if there name was in their clothing items. Independence is important because there is only one teacher and so many little ones, we would like to decrease their frustration with clothing. Keep in mind zippers, buttons, and shoelaces, etc. when purchasing clothing for the school season.
  • Newsletters: We send home weekly newsletters to communicate upcoming events in our classroom. Please look for these each week. They are usually sent home on Thursdays for the upcoming week.
  • Website: We have website that you can visit:
  • Communication with you: Various forms include: email, notes, phone calls. Where is your child going after school? Birthdays? Choir? Please let us know… we don’t like surprises… 
  • Birthday Parties: If you are not inviting the whole class, girls, boys, etc., please main the invitations. Also, please let your child’s teacher know of any change in after school plans.
  • Specials (Music, PE, and Library): We have these 1-2 times a week. Please send appropriate shoes for PE and library books back on (or before) library day. The first week of school we will know of the specific times for these specials.
  • Needed Supplies: Clorox wipes, baby wipes, Ziplocs (all sizes), Dixie cups, plastic utensils, paper plates, and band aids.
  • Field Trips: We go to the Fordville train station, sledding at the golf course, and Homme Dam. We would LOVE volunteers to go with us.
  • Midterms/Report Cards: Each of these will come home (or conference) 4 times a year. Please look over the midterm/report card and talk to your child’s teacher if there are any concerns.
  • DIBELS: DIBELS is a reading test given to your child 3 times a year. The test will measure beginning sound fluency, phonemic awareness, reading fluency, and letter naming fluency.
