Homework Machine Rubric

Advanced (A)

-Written in one paragraph of at least 7 sentences with an intro sentence, supporting sentences, and a closing sentence.

-Writer takes a position on whether or not to keep a homework machine.

-Writer backs up his/her position on why or why not to keep a homework machine.

-Ideas are organized and the writing flows; the writer has thought about the sound of the words as well as the meaning.

-Uses strong vocabulary: there are no dead words.

-Two or fewer errors in spelling, grammar, or capitalization.

-The writer convinces the audience of his or her position.

Proficient (B)

-Written in one paragraph of at least 7 sentences with an intro sentence, supporting sentences, and a closing sentence.

-Writer takes a position on whether or not to keep a homework machine but does not solidly back up his or her position.

-Ideas are somewhat organized and there is some flow to the writing.

-Uses interesting vocabulary with some dead words.

-Three to five errors in spelling, grammar, or capitalization.

-The writer takes a position but is not too convincing to the audience.

Basic (C)

-Written in one paragraph of 4-6 sentences with an intro sentence, supporting sentences, and a closing sentence.

-The writer does not really take a position but writes about both positions.

-Ideas are not well organized.

-Vocabulary is mostly familiar.

-Six to ten errors in spelling, grammar, or capitalization.

-The writer does not convince the audience of a position.

Below Basic (D)

-Not written in a clear paragraph or written in a paragraph of less than 4 sentences.

-Writer seems unaware of the audience with very little organization.

-Vocabulary is not expressive and somewhat limited.

-More than 10 errors in spelling, grammar, or capitalization.
