Fall 2015

Homework is to be turned in the beginning of class on the due date, which will be every Thursday.

All homework must be completed in your sketchbook in vast detail. Your handwriting must be legible. No COPY & PASTE!!!

When including images of artwork, make sure they are quality copies and preferably in color (this also applies to hand-drawn representations).

Never use glue in your sketchbook! Tape or glue sticks only!

Artist pages should be of the highest quality and reflective of their work.

Homework passes can be rewarded for extra credit work, attending an art event/museum, donating supplies, etc.

HW 1
Due 8/20 / Assignment: Sketchbook and Art Contract due as course requirement.
HW 2
Due 8/27 / Form: Define the term form in your own words (this response could be visual or in words). Select one of the following artist to create an artist page: Tony Smith, Michelangelo or Claes Oldenberg. Your artist page should include the artist name, date born/died, a monumental/influential moment when they became artist, style of art, and at least two examples of their work (printed out and/or hand drawn). The artist page should reflect their style of work.

Due 9/3 / Assignment: Louise Nevelson. Write and show visuals (either print them out or draw them) in your sketchbook about how Nevelson creates her sculpture. Describe the artist’s work and explain your opinion of the emphasis of assemblage within her sculpture. You should have at least one page dedicated to this artist in your sketchbook.

Due 9/10 / Assignment: Artist: Joseph Cornell and his “Collections” Assemblage in Boxes. Write and show visuals in your sketchbook about how Cornell creates his found object sculptures. Describe the artist’s work and

Due 9/17 / Assignment: Rueben Margolin “Creating Waves in Wood and Time” Video. Write and show visuals (either print them out or draw them) in your sketchbook about how Margolin creates kinetic art. Describe how his artwork “moves.” You should have at least one page dedicated to this artist in your sketchbook.
HW 6
Due 9/24 / Assignment: Alexander Calder. Write and show visuals (either print them out or draw them) in your sketchbook about how Calder creates his sculptures. Describe the artist’s work and explain your opinion of the emphasis of kinetic forms within his sculpture. You should have at least one page dedicated to this artist in your sketchbook.
HW 7
Due 10/1 / Assignment: Janet Echelman, “Taking Imagination Seriously” video.
Write and show visuals (either print them out or draw them) in your sketchbook about how Echelman creates sculpture. Describe how her artwork “moves, changes, and interacts.” You should have at least one page dedicated to this artist in your sketchbook. Also, explain your opinion of technology and art being integrated. Is technology a medium you’d like to explore as an artist? If so, how would you?
HW 8
Due 10/8 / Assignment: Skoglund. Write and show visuals (either print them out or draw them) in your sketchbook about Skoglund’s installation art. You should have at least one page dedicated to this artist in your sketchbook. Express your thoughts of installation as an art form and how concepts are essential to art.
HW 9
Due 10/15 / Assignment: Neil Harbisson “I Listen to Color” Video. Write and show visuals (either print them out or draw them) in your sketchbook about how Harbisson creates uses color within his artwork. Describe Harbisson’s artwork and explain your opinion of the emphasis of color within artwork. You should have at least one page dedicated to this artist in your sketchbook.
HW 10
Due 10/22 / Assignment: Shehab “A Thousand Times No” Video. Write and show visuals (either print them out or draw them) in your sketchbook about how Shehab creates uses current events within her artwork. Describe Shehab’s artwork and explain your opinion of the emphasis of politics within her work. You should have at least one page dedicated to this artist in your sketchbook.

Due 10/29 / Assignment: Artist: Barbara Hepworth
Write and show visuals (either print them out or draw them) in your sketchbook about how Hepworth creates her sculpture. Describe the artist’s work and explain your opinion of the emphasis of abstract form within her sculpture. You should have at least one page dedicated to this artist in your sketchbook.
HW 12
Due 11/5 / Assignment: Artist: Constantin Brancusi. Describe the Brancusi’s work “The Kiss” and “Bird In Space.” Write and show visuals (either print them out or draw them) in your sketchbook of these sculptures. Discuss the artist’s concept of simplifying form (with the first sculpture) and simplifying movement (with the second). You should have at least one page dedicated to these artworks in your sketchbook.

Due 11/12 / Assignment: Research and find sculptor who primarily focuses on carving, preferably someone contemporary (currently exhibiting their work). Write a brief description of the artist’s work and show at least 2 visuals. Create a Compare and Contract diagram, describing how the artist you found is similar and/or different from the work of Henry Moore.

Due 11/19 / Assignment: Artist Research – Write a brief biography of the artist you chose for the research assignment. Include one photograph of the artist and another photo of the artist working, either in their studio or on site. DO NOT PUT THESE IMAGES PERMANENTLY IN YOUR SKETCHBOOK! YOU WILL USE THESE FOR YOUR RESEARCH BOOK. PPT: copy/paste into a word document and email in.

Due 12/3 / Assignment: Artist Research – Write an Artist Statement of the artist you chose for the research assignment. Include at least 2 photographs of the artist’s designs/sketches/maquettes of their work. DO NOT PUT THESE IMAGES PERMANENTLY IN YOUR SKETCHBOOK! YOU WILL USE THESE FOR YOUR RESEARCH BOOK. PPT: copy/paste into a word document and email in.

Due 12/10 / Assignment: Artist Research –8 to 10 color photographs of the artist’s work you choose to do the research assignment on.DO NOT PUT THESE IMAGES PERMANENTLY IN YOUR SKETCHBOOK! YOU WILL USE THESE FOR YOUR RESEARCH BOOK. PPT: copy/paste into a word document and email in.

Due 12/17 / Assignment: Artist Research – Write out your discussion notes for presenting your Artist Research Book/PPT.
