Graham Stroke Unit (GSU)

Introduction: Homerton is an innovative and friendly Foundation Hospital based in the East London borough of Hackney. We provide general hospital services to Hackney and the City of London, as well as a variety of specialist care services including obstetrics and neonatology and neuro-rehabilitation across East London and beyond.

Contact details: The lead band 7 physiotherapist on GSU is Helen Crabb who is supported by clinical lead physiotherapist Joseph Buttell. There are also 2 rotational band 6 and 2 band 5 physiotherapists who are also involved in supervising students. Helen Crabb is the student co-ordinator and can be contacted on 0208 510 7853 or

Transport Information:

There is very little opportunity for parking around the Homerton and we would advise you to come via public transport. Please visit www.homerton.nhs.uk for further details regarding transport links.

Uniform Policy: You may wear a white Polo Shirt or Tunic with navy blue trousers. ‘Smart’ trainers or black shoes are permitted. Male students should be clean shaven or alternatively have a full beard. Female students should have their hair tied back and off the shoulder. Stud earrings and/or a wedding band are the only jewellery permitted. Your University ID badge must be clearly displayed at all times. Please do NOT travel in your uniform.

Pre-placement reading: You will be expected to have a basic knowledge of:

·  Subjective and Objective assessment of a neurological patient

·  Motor control theories

·  Normal movement

·  Stroke pathology

First day reporting instructions: On your 1st day please report to the physiotherapy outpatients reception for 8.30am and ask to be directed to the GSU therapy office. Please bring with you a form of photo ID (e.g. driving licence or passport) for registration with HR. If you are sick or going to be late you must ring the department to let us know.
