The Wellness Center at the Homeless Prenatal Program seeks to benefit pregnant and parenting women, and by extension their children and families, by providing non-judgmental, culturally competent wellness services that are free and accessible to low-income families.

Job Title: Wellness Center Volunteer Coordinator and Health Educator

Summary of Job:

The Wellness Center Volunteer Coordinator and Health Educator is responsible for managing all of HPP’s external Wellness Volunteers including the Volunteer Doula Program, UCSF Nursing Student Interns, and volunteers for a variety of Wellness programs including Yoga, Acupuncture, Massage, etc. Responsibilities include recruitment, orientation, scheduling, reporting, and program design and coordination. The Volunteer Coordinator and Health Educator also facilitates a weekly English childbirth education class and works with co-facilitators and Spanish class teachers to develop curriculum and support for clients.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage Wellness Center Volunteers
  • Serve as the main contact/support person for acupuncture, massage, prenatal/postpartum yoga, chiropractic care, prenatal photos,and others
  • Actively recruit prospective volunteers
  • Hold monthly volunteer orientations
  • Maintain a current list of volunteer contact information in an online database
  • Match interested volunteers with available opportunities
  • Coordinate with HPP Volunteer Coordinator
  • Manage the HPP Volunteer Doula Program:
  • Recruit and orient new volunteer doulas
  • Hold monthly doula meetings
  • Advertise doula services to clients and case managers
  • Solicit and organize doula requests
  • Match available doulas with client requests; help facilitate back-ups and partnerships between doulas
  • Follow up with clients and doulas to ensure that they have made contact and are a good fit for one another; be available for doulas who have questions about supporting a client or need to debrief after a birth
  • Oversee google groupand google site for the program
  • Record all doula activity in online database
  • Facilitate weekly English childbirth education classes as part of the 10 week prenatal class series
  • Prior to class, review the lesson plan with co-facilitators and Spanish class teachers, make any needed changes based on prior experience/specific needs of the class
  • After class, follow up with any needs or questions that may have come up during the session (i.e. connecting clients with further resources/information)
  • Supervise nursing student interns; assist them in developing and completing meaningful projects that will advance their learning and serve the needs of the Wellness Center
  • Maintain relationships with hospital staff and other supportive service agencies around San Francisco to facilitate referrals from and to the Wellness Center
  • Facilitate connections between clients and case managers based on client needs that emerge during wellness center activities
  • Runa monthly belly casting activity for clients
  • Assist in the development of Wellness Center program objectives; develop and administer surveys to evaluate programs; record and analyze data to provide information on Wellness Center activities to management, grant writers and funders.
  • Assist in coordinating Wellness Center events such as the annual Health Fair, annual Zoo reunion, babyshowers, and other special HPP events.
  • Schedule and host occasional weekend doula trainings, depending on availability
  • Maintain and update Wellness Center calendar and fliers for HPP staff
  • Maintain and organize Wellness Center donations

Administration:

  • Input all required data into the HPP Salesforce database (HENRI) on a timely basis
  • Keep accurate, up-to-date, confidential documentation of client contact and activity
  • Maintain a record of all volunteer activities in online database; develop reports on aggregate volunteer activities; regularly report summary information to HPP management and grant writers
  • Make reminder calls for massage therapy and chiropractic appointments
  • Attend weekly staff trainings, team meetings, and individual supervision meetings

Qualifications:

  • Required:
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Birth Doula certification (or training and equivalent experience)
  • Highly skilled in group facilitation
  • Exceptional leadership and organizational skills, and ability to effectively recruit and manage a large group of dynamic program volunteers
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Able to work independently as well as collaboratively as part of a close knit team
  • Experience working with diverse communities
  • Ability to maintain appropriate professional and personal boundaries with high integrity
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Gmail, Google Office Suite (Google Groups/Sites/Docs etc)
  • Minimum 24-month commitment
  • Preferred
  • Childbirth education experience
  • Bilingual English/Spanish
  • Prior involvement with the San Francisco volunteer doula community (HPP Doulas, SFGH Doulas, Birth Justice Project, Bay Area Doula Project, etc)
  • Postpartum Doula certification (or training/equivalent experience)
  • Experience providing postpartum and breastfeeding support
  • Experience working with homeless/at risk families; individuals with a history of substance use, mental health issues, and/or domestic violence
  • Skilled in crisis intervention and conflict resolution
  • Experience in survey development, data analysis and program evaluation

Physical Requirements: This position requires the ability to work under stress and handle multiple project deadlines.This position requires an annual tuberculosis test and may require moderate lifting.
