Home Economics 6/7
Course Description: This 12 week Home Economics program consists of 2 compnents: Food & Nutrition (6weeks) and Clothing & Textiles (6 weeks).
The program this is an introductory course that on skills learned in Home Economics 6&7. The program teaches students practical skills that can be directly transferred to the student’s daily lives. Students will learn principals of basic sewing techniques, as well as, learn about basic nutition and food preparation techniques.
Foods & Nutrition
— Equipment, safety & sanitation
— Canada Food Guide, major nutreints & healthy food choices
— Labs focusing on healthy snacks & breakfasts
— Quiz & practical lab tests
Clothing & Textiles
— To demo the correct care and use of sewing and pressing equipment
— To understand basic terminology used in sewing
— To complete a variety of sewing of sewing techniques
— To demo a knowledge of basic clothing care by completing a home laundry assignment
Evaluation
The Foods & Nutrition and Clothing & Textiles marks will be combined to give a final mark.

*students will complete a lab assignment at home and have parents evaluate them.
Labs are marked out of 20 and then converted to a mark out of 4 using the following scale: 4 – exceeds expectations
3 – meets expectations
2 – minimally meets expectations
1 – does not yet meet expectations
Supplies and Equipment
A place will be provided in the Home Econonmics room for students to keep the following items: 1. Duo-tang & plastic sleeve
2. pen or pencil
3. Sewing equipment, thread & fabric
4. Agenda Book – bring to each class
Attendance & Assignments
As much of this course is based on practical work, attendance is extremely important. It is the student’s reponsibility to make up any missed work. Missed tests or quizzes will be written the first day back.
All assignments/projects must be handed in on time. Due dates will always be given will in advance. Sewing projects cannot be removed from the class until they have been marked. Any sewing projects removed without the teacher’s permission may not be marked. Sewing projects must be finished before the start of the cooking component of the course. If the sewing project has not been completed the student will not be permitted to use the food lab.
Specific lunch time & afterschool make–up sessions will be set for student’s who need extra time in order to catch up.
